Kendrick Lamar "Had To Live Up" To Jay-Z's Guest Appearance

Kendrick Lamar

Now with a Jay-Z collaboration, the Compton rapper has his sights set on work with Snoop Dogg, Erykah Badu and Sade.

Kendrick Lamar felt a sense of accomplishment when he got Jay-Z's verse for the remix to his hit single "Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe." "It was one of them feelings where, you know, you finally reached that moment to where you're actually respected," the Compton rapper says in an interview with Get Schooled. "Jay-Z don't have to [be on] nobody's track, so for him to actually hop on a record of mine just shows the level of respect he has for me as an artist. And as a true artist, that's what you want. You have all the money in the world and the awards, and accolades and stuff, you always want that respect. For him to do that, it's just one of them things. I felt like, 'OK, I finally accomplished what I sought out to do the moment I turned 13, and that's be respected by people I respect."

Then the real work began, as Kendrick had to pen his own lyrics for the remix. "I felt like I had to try to at least come some type of correct because that was my moment," he says. "All them years of rapping and writing raps didn't mean nothing if I couldn't live up to that moment."

Although Kendrick got Jigga on his song, there's still a list of artists he hopes to collaborate with. "An artist that I want to work with now, I would say it's Erykah Badu," Kendrick says. "Sade. I haven't got a record with Snoop yet. That's kind of crazy. I really want to lock in with Snoop."

WHo fuckin retard even buys these overpriced shitty beats headphones? Even if they got dres name on dem, they still suck. Would you bum condoms with ron jeremy name on dem? same thing, stop buying those bitchass headphones and maybe dre will sometimes in year 3000 make an album called botox.

They need to live up to his expectations on a track as well. When making tracks with someone who is seriously talented & is really a fan the artist with the most longevity should want to make something epic. Not just another track.

  • gnigga_pleeze
one of the many things that makes him dope is that he doesn't rely on getting big name features to sell his album. he didn't even get any dre beats on his aftermath debut. so fuck a nas feature, don't fix it if its not broken.
  • aaronj
kendrick has always been great when he has to work with a GREAT mc or with a legend but when he works with idiots, he always gives throwaway verses. hopefully he works with Em, Nas,... would be amazing.
  • joe
    he should work with nas
    • Anonymous
I've been saying that myself. A Kendrick-Nas collabo would be dope!!
    • Fuck Queensbridge

  • Anonymous
respect dude is fucking dope as good if not better then eminem
    • Anonymous
he may be as good as Em in 2013 but he'll never come close to or surpass Slim Shady in his prime circa 1999-2001
    • Anonymous
eminem 1999-2002 - the greatest rapper of all time. nobody even comes close.
    • IMhO
comparing kendrick to eminem is comparing apples to oranges..
    • sam snead
Thats the problem with hip hop these days, nobody even heard infinite but most people heard section80. This is the best new rapper in many years but he over exposes himself with certain songs he has been doing lately. There has been quite a few artists that came in the game swinging like this but then fell off or never lived up 2 the first album. Lupe Fiasco, AZ, Mobb Deep, hell even maybe the best that ever did it in my opinion Nas has trouble living up to his first album even after dropping another classic or 2.
    • sam snead
Add Jigga to the list as well
    • Trollhunter
You know how hard it is to have GENUINE back to back to back brilliant classics. To this day the only hip hop artists to EVER have accomplish this was ATCQ.
  • dentaldamboy
Don't worry Kendrick...you totally murkt Jay on the song. Jay is way past his prime and you are leagues ahead of him lyrically right now.
    • Anonymous
disagree but k.dot was better than hov
    • Anonymous
Kendrick's verse was better, but he made it so obvious that his point was to kill Jay on the song.
