Lauryn Hill Pays $900,000 Tax Bill

Lauryn Hill pays off her tax bill, but still faces three charges in U.S. District Court.

Lauryn Hill has paid her $900,000 tax bill, her attorney said. But the award-winning emcee/singer isn't necessarily off the hook with the federal government.

Hill, who owed nearly $1 million in back taxes and penalties, still faces three charges of failing to file tax returns. She is due in U.S. District Court in Newark, New Jersey today to face the charges. Hill is accused of not filing tax returns on more than $1.8 million of income earned between 2005 and 2007.

Her attorney said that Hill's punishment—she faces up to a year in jail on each charge—may be adjusted given her repayment of the bill, according to Reuters.

Hill owed more than $500,000 in back taxes. Penalties brought the total bill to more than $900,000. Hill released the single "Neurotic Society" on iTunes Friday. She did not seem pleased with being "required" to release the tune: "Here is a link to a piece that I was ‘required' to release immediately, by virtue of the impending legal deadline," Hill wrote on her Tumblr site Saturday. "I love being able to reach people directly, but in an ideal scenario, I would not have to rush the release of new music."

Lauryn hill is a talented woman. She is also a very very stupid person. Everyone no matter who you are knows the secret to success is hard work. 1. Her name is NOT Ms, Mrs lauryn hill . Her name is. Lauryn Noelle hill. 2. She is NOT the child of former slaves her father was a computer programmer and her mother a English teacher. 3. She entered the music business knowing very well that she would not keep 100 percent profit of album sales only a percent depending on how well it sell's your contract can be restructured. To blame other people or circumstances for her poor financial skills is typicall lauryn 4. Ask yourself how come she could not live within her means how does she not own her own home? Why rent because you want to remain "underground"& not be noticed by the eyes of the public media. If that's true why not put the home in a family members name or a business corporation that she or someone close to her owned? It was ok for her to have 3-4 business corporations she owned for her to receive royalties &other forms of income under. 5. She is a grown woman with 6 children I mind you if you have not realized that even if you have personal issues with whatever or whom ever your children's future and stability comes first. Not stories about slavery and the music industry taking advantage or a young black woman, worrying about living underground be real if someone in this day and age wants to find someone your going to find them. Especially when your receiving money into a corporation everything has a paper trail . 6. If lauryn hill just maintained a positive work ethic of consistently delivering HIt records time after time like she is capable of she would have never had to make up stories and beg Sony (TWM) for money to get out of the situation she put herself and her family into. No one I repeat NO ONE told her to stop working or paying taxes. She took the liberty of doing that misfortune to Both herself and her ( record label) and (family). She never took responsibility and said your Honor I am wrong I chose to do this to myself and I must accept the consequences of my actions like a strong woman should. She preaches a lot and yet does not practice what she spewes. 7. Just get back to making Good music and the rest will follow .

I love all these Joe the Plumber punks preachin about taxes. None of us have ever had to deal with the kind of money that she had at her age so we have no idea how her books got messed up. She's an artist, not a financial planner. This is one of the most common things that happen to entertainers. They are focused on what they do and trust other people to handle their money. FOH and go download your W-2 in Turbo Tax.

So I'm white and I think Hill is wrong here, does that make me a racist? I listen to Public Enemy and Dead Prez, am I still a racist?
    • 614grind
^^^Just because you listen to PE and Dead Prez doesn't mean you aren't racist. But, it does mean there's a damn good chance you aren't!

Remember when hip-hop was about "Fight the Power" and "F the Police," being a voice against the system? Ever since this white African (NOT black, all the black candidates who ran you gave NO support) became President, you all became a bunch of ass-kissers. All this DESPITE the fact that Obama supports maintaining the gun laws and tax-hikes which have gotten a RECORD number of urban artists in trouble. You made your bed, you lie in's hoping you make a better choice on November 8, 2016.

The other guy was one the worst presidential candidates in history, if not the worst. And it's the artists fault for being irresponsible. If they don't like paying the higher taxes, don't be a successful entertainer.
    • Burmy
There were other guys besides these two...Big Boi voted for third-party candidate Gary Johnson, and Prodigy wrote in Ron Paul. BOTH REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS ARE WHAT'S WRONG-THIRD PARTY 2016!

Racism is exploited this days. I was in a restaurant the other day and this ghetto female pronounced loudly that "her drink was watered down...because she was black"...and they call the server who thinks something is wrong with that situation the racist

Look at this moronic statement...""Here is a link to a piece that I was required' to release immediately, by virtue of the impending legal deadline," You dummy! You were forced to release that on your own because you failed to pay your taxes! I like how she makes it like someone else's fault. That's like if I try to rush to work cuz I'm late, crash and kill someone, then blame my work schedule for starting early! She needs to accept responsibility of her stupid decisions
    • Mr Flamboyant
      Well said.
    • jus10
I wouldn't say crash and kill someone, but perhaps get a speeding ticket(we all been there), but I get your point!
    • 614grind
What's your point? She said she was required to put something out because of her legal issues. You just sayin what she said except you sprinkled in the disrespect.
  • Slim Shady
Women all grabbin at my shish-kabob, bought Lauryn Hill's tape so her kids could starve
    • Jai
Why would you say something like this, aside from the fact that you are an awful slut. Piece of shit. Suck snot from a sick knob.
  • Anonymous
Who put this chick on a pedestal? She think she can skip taxes, use record label budget to pay taxes, then not put out music? Artists always think they are too good to put out music. If you're not putting out music, are you an artist?
  • white guy
hahaha i hope this dumb bitch gets a white judge! serves ya right ya racist CUNT

The only racist cunt is you.
