Yesterday (Saturday, May 4), Ms. Lauryn Hill released “Neurotic Society (Cumpulsory Mix).” Along with the track, Ms. Hill released a statement, explaining that she was “required” to release the song “immediately.”

“Here is a link to a piece that I was ‘required’ to release immediately, by virtue of the impending legal deadline,” she wrote on her Tumblr page. “I love being able to reach people directly, but in an ideal scenario, I would not have to rush the release of new music… but the message is still there.”

Lauryn Hill’s legal deadline refers to tax problems she has been facing. As reported in late April, Hill was given two weeks to repay tax debt. Her new deadline became May 6.

Hill’s displeasure with the circumstances surrounding this song’s release also had to do with the death of Chris “Mac Daddy” Kelly.

“In light of Wednesday’s tragic loss (of former label mate Chris Kelly). I am even more pressed to YELL this to a multitude that may not understand the cost of allowing today’s unhealthy paradigms to remain unchecked!”

Since the news about her tax woes originally broke, Hill signed a deal with Sony to release new music. “Yes, I have recently entered into an agreement with Sony Worldwide Entertainment, to launch a new label, on which my new music will be released,” she said in a statement in late April. “And yes, I am working on new music.”
