Sara Kana Comments On GrindTimeNow Welcoming A "New Generation"
Exclusive: Sara Kana speaks on her departure from GrindTimeNow, says the Rap Battle league needed time to re-evolve.
Following Bronx rapper Sara Kana’s departure from GrindTimeNow over a year ago, many were left wondering what the motivation behind her exit was. Speaking exclusively with HipHopDX, the Barz & Brastrapz CEO shared the specific reason behind the move from GrindTimeNow to her own battle league.
According to Sara Kana, there came a point where those who were a part of GrindTimeNow were focusing on their own goals and this ultimately left room for a new generation to step up and take the reins.
“Everybody was a part of GrindTime for so many years. I think it just got to a point where everybody had their own individual goals and it was time for the new generation to start,” Sara Kana explained. “They’ve launched so many Battle Rap careers. I know that a lot of people may disagree—but this is a part of Battle Rap. It’s an unspoken rule within Battle Rap that it just rotates. The door just keeps rotating. You can continuously invite the same rappers in to keep battle rapping and the fans will still love it and start building new names.”
The topic of re-evolution was also brought up by the Battle Rap booking agent who spoke on the need for even Battle Rap to re-evolve just like any other brand.
“For me, I don’t think GrindTime really left. It just needed to re-evolve into what it’s going to be now,” said Sara Kana. “That’s just what it is. Everybody is afraid of the change, but the evolving can only help. Everybody is just evolving into their own patterns because we learned so much from the GrindTime brand. A lot of people that were on the internet saying whatever they had to say, there’s not one brand that’s going to be perfect. There’s no such thing. At the end of the day, you’ve gotta do what you have to do and learn from it and move on.”
Sara Kana's comments on the famed Rap Battle league follows this weeks news of GrindTimeNow founder Madd Illz being sued by former partner Lush One over income the league allegedly received through YouTube advertisements.
