Flatbush Zombies have been making a name for themselves over the last year, most recently releasing its mixtape D.R.U.G.S. in July.

During an interview with Scion released exclusively to HipHopDX, Erick Arc Elliott, Meechy Darko and Zombie Juice explain their origin as a group, explaining that they knew each other from when they were kids and that Erick’s interest in making music inspired the others.

“I met [Zombie] in school in fourth grade, and I met [Erick] up the block when I was four years old. Doing kid shit. That’s it, right? We used to make fun of kids and shit, that’s how we got cool,” explained Darko. “[Erick] was making music, keeping good at music, I had nothing else to do with my life. I hit this man up and said we gotta do this shit. [Zombie and I] did the same, and together, we have the Flatbush Zombies.”

Erick added that the group’s intention isn’t to start a movement, but to function independently and bless the masses with quality music. “Some people create teams or movements and shit like that,” said Erick. “I feel like it has no purpose, really. They’re leading by something that’s material or something that’s not an ideology. There’s nothing to back it besides saying, ‘Yo, I rep this.'”

“Our formation was more of a rebirth of consciousness,” added Darko. “It happened to me when I was like 17, 18 years old. My life started over. I’m a different individual, but I’m just better and different. That’s about it. It’s about growth, it’s about change, evolving to the next level. If you’re staying the same, then you ain’t doing something right. Something’s wrong with you. That’s what makes the Zombies.”

Scion will present its Open Mic event with A$AP Rocky, A$AP Ferg, Bodega Bamz, 4th Pyramid and DJ GetLive on February 20th at Brooklyn, New York’s Public Assembly. The only way to attend the event is to participate on Twitter or Instagram. More information can be found here.
