Although Cash Money Records finds itself sonically anchored by the likes of the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League and Cool and Dre, the New Orleans label’s original sound was crafted by the legendary Mannie Fresh. Now, in a recent interview with MTV, Mannie speaks out on his former label’s newfound sound and style.
Mannie Fresh told MTV that he has a love/hate relationship with Cash Money’s current musical direction. He said that while the new Cash Money has pioneered some new original styles, he feels that some of the label’s musical output is overly derivative of other contemporary Southern Hip Hop acts.
“Some things I love, some things I hate,” said Fresh. “I think there’s a lot of stuff in the South right now that sounds the same…Even if it’s the way my music sounds, I think it’s overdone, it’s time for something new to happen. Now anything that goes left, and is new and is creative, I love it. But if you mimicking somebody and you’re overdoing it, I don’t know. I don’t get it. That’s what I’m saying.”

Although Fresh parted ways with Cash Money in 2005, he has kept active as a producer. He is currently signed to Def Jam South and released his sophomore solo effort Return of the Ballin’.
