MC Hammer Says He Hopes To Inspire Minority Entrepreneurs

Hammer plans a summer mentoring program in the Bay Area.

MC Hammer has been in the business for over two decades. And since his time as a chart topping hit-maker ended he has focused on being an entrepreneur investing in several different tech companies, most based in his native California. Now the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Hammer, who was born Stanley Burrell, is planning to dole out some advice to fellow entrepreneurs.

The nine week program, which will begin June 16, will focus on exposing minority and female business people to the ever expanding tech industry. Seven of these minority entrepreneurs will live together in a house in Silicon Valley. Hammer was contracted by New Media Entrepreneurship, which specializes in advising minority business owners. Hammer will be joined in his advisory duties by executives at such hot companies as Twitter and Foursquare.

The rapper says he plans to be open and available for his pupils, saying, “Hollywood is in the perception business where you create layers to create mystery. In Silicon Valley it’s about taking away the layers to get to the substance.” Hammer gave the Wall Street Journal a little preview of the tips he plans to dole out this summer. He advises, “You don’t have to invent the wheel, but you might want to be the company that invents the rims.” To learn more about the program visit New Media Entrepreneurship’s website.
