Underground Spotlight: Jakk Frost

The Beards in the building! Jakk Frost explains his attention to detail for the "Throwback Jakk" series featuring his remake of A Tribe Called Quest's "Footprints."

Philadelphia’s Jakk Frost is a connoisseur of “Golden Era” Hip Hop—so much so that when he and Benja Styles are crafting their Throwback Jakk mixtapes, they’ll get a beat by any means necessary.

“I actually had to dig up some beats, and Benja Styles had to re-create [some tracks],” Jakk explained. “For instance, I did ‘I Got It Like That’ by the Jungle Brothers. Benja had to re-create that—there’s no instrumental for that.”

Jakk makes his city a point of emphasis on the second edition of Throwback Jakk, You need not look any further than “Pink Cookies In A Plastic Bag Getting Crushed By Buildings .”

“On the original version, he was trying to holla at the chick by using the names of all these emcees that was in the game already as references and metaphors,” Jakk added. “But my version is using all Philly emcees.”

Jakk’s Illadelph interpretation of another Queens classic also manifests itself on his version of A Tribe Called Quest’s “Footprints.” Jakk trades bars with his potential Duck Down labelmate Freeway on their Beards In the Building collaboration. By now you can find Throwback Jakk 2 at DatPiff, your favorite blog and the usual online spots. For more information on Jakk Frost, head over to TheRealJakkFrost.com  or MaadManagement.com.
