Tim Arango of the NY Post is accusing Def Jam (among other labels) of manipulating their Sound Scan figures, For those unaware, Sound Scan is the method of recording weekly point-of-sale figures from the major music chains. It is how artists know they get a platinum plaque.

The speculation stems from the fact that most music executives receive bonuses in which Sound Scan numbers are a factor. Good Sound Scan numbers also reflect well on the reputation of the label. There are some technical questions as to how Def Jam could manipulate these numbers. This issue is speculative at this point.

In a statement to the NY Post, an Island Def Jam representative said: “We do not respond to such unfounded speculation and innuendo… Claims of this type degrade the hard work and accomplishments of our artists and we will protect them from such erroneous claims.”
