Soulja Boy is never one to shy away from tooting his own horn but this time he may have gone a little overboard. Yesterday, the Atlanta hit-maker tweeted, “I wrote ‘Whip My Hair’ for Willow Smith.” Understandably, people could be excused for assuming that that means the 20 year old superstar was the main creative force behind the hit. But the real story is something different.

It turns out that “Whip My Hair” was, in fact, written by the songwriting team of Ronald Jackson and Janae Rockwell. But during the song Willow Smith does sing, “Hop up out the bed / Turn my swag on,” a line from Soulja’s 2009 anthem, “Turn My Swag On.” Soulja Boy reportedly trademarked the phrase, so the man DeAndre Way did, in an indirect way, contribute to the creation of “Whip My Hair” and for that he likely received some credit or monetary compensation.
