Wyclef Jean will be announcing his candidacy for President of Haiti, according to AllHipHop.com.
A source confirmed that the rapper/singer/producer will make the announcement next Thursday, August 5 – two days prior to the country’s August 7 deadline.
As previously reported, Clef revealed to CNN that he had filled out the proper paperwork in order to enter the race, though he was, at the time, undecided.
Wyclef has been at the forefront of the recovery efforts in his homeland, following a tragic earthquake that ravaged the country last January.
Given his popularity and financial resources, analysts predict he would easily win the election, which is slated for November 28.
UPDATE: In an interview with Time.com published Wednesday, Wyclef Jean confirmed he will attempt to become the next president of his native Haiti. The confirmation ends weeks of speculation, as Jean is expected to make another announcement during an appearance on CNN’s “Larry King Live” Thursday, August 5.
“If not for the earthquake, I probably would have waited another 10 years before doing this,” Jean said Tuesday night. “The quake drove home to me that Haiti can’t wait another 10 years for us to bring it into the 21st century.”
Jean, collected donations for earthquake relief through his charity, Yele Haiti. While splitting his time between music and his philanthropic efforts, his charity Yele Haiti came under fire.
Haiti’s former Chamber of Deputies leader Pierre Eric Jean-Jacques also recently told the Associated Press that his Ansanm Nou Fo party has an agreement with Wyclef Jean regarding his presidential run.
“If I can’t take five years out to serve my country as president, then everything I’ve been singing about, like equal rights, doesn’t mean anything,” Wyclef added. “My decision is a draft…I’ve been drafted by the youth.”

Wyclef has been true to Haiti since he came to the states. I feel like there is a sincere motive because he understands the history and the people of Haiti. For those who know about Haiti and its history understand that this island being the first slave colony to emancipate itself from enslavement know that since that time, it has endured a political and economical onslaught to ruin its government and infrastructure of development. Wyclef, along with others has worked a long time to improve areas in Haiti such as education, foreign relations, etc. So much so to where at certain times we don’t hear from Wyclef in a while. Which is completely understandable. I think Wyclef is doing what we all should be doing. That is, understanding our situation, politically, economically, and even spiritually. To me, and only in my opinion, that is what hip-hop was meant to do. Educate and inform. Inspire us to change our conditions and to fight the evils that control our schools, families, and even our money. So, if it means anything, I think we should support Wyclef for his run and even during his presidency if the Creator and ancestors allow it. So that Haiti can one day be free from the utter bullshit of Western European and American influences. Okay, first I have to give Wyclef credit for being willing to take on such a large responsibility and wanting the BE the change that he wants to see in Haitian politics. But…. I don’t think Wyclef winning the election would be in the best interest of the Haitian people. The challenges that the next president there will face are enormous, and I think it would be best for someone with more experience governing to take them on. And also, focus on this being a monumental achievement for Hip-Hop is a real lack of perspective on the part of those who are making those comments. There are much bigger issues in play here than hip-hop’s place in the American cultural landscape. People’s LIVES are at stake here. If the next president of Haiti fails to sufficiently attack the problems facing that nation, the results could be catastrophic. I mean, I respect Wyclef and all, but i’m not sure that making him president really helps Haiti.

I respect Wyclef and everything that he has done, but I honestly think he is out of his league here, I don’t think he has the experience necessary to do it, I mean President is not a job you can just walk into cus you feel its time, he has been an ambassador but i think the should get his feet wet with other political roles first and work his way up, and just the fact that he is associated with hip hop and liberals, gives people who probably know nothing at all about him a reason to hate him, and vote against him. The nature of politics dosent really deal with how many people you think love you, being a celeb is different you never get an accurate count of people who hate you cus most people that do can just ignore you and news about you because it dosent affect them, President and politics on the other hand is different cus it does affect them and they will voice it.

in reference to your last statement..we American’s struggle with this concept, but because “they” voice something doesn’t mean it will happen. American’s are struggling with this problem now. Just because you have opinion and may be asked to express it doesn’t mean it really counts. Are you talking about American politics? I am not familiar with Haitian politics but I do know the Haitian media were asking him to run years ago. I don’t think Wyclef devastate his country like papa doc/baby doc or non existent like Preval. Yes we look at Wyclef as “just” a musician but I think people underestimate the power of hip hop. NOTHING under handed can happen to Wyclef if he wins THE whole world will be watching, not to mention he will peak interest from minorities and others alike here the states, especially african-americans. Haiti will be in the spotlight and if Wyclef wins and continues to be the same he will fight vigorously for Ayiti(in Kreyol) which he has shown to do over the years. Like any country Haiti deserves a good leader. I hope if Wyclef wins his country will support him to he utmost.

Does he know enough about the Haitian government to risk worsening the lives of Haiti’s 9,035,536 citizens? The most important thing in this life for a person is being thoughtfull for people who really need help in my opinion..eventhough you can success or not..to encourage for an action for like this is so so so respectfull for me..he is young..he has a great heart with full of love and bravery and he is a partiot of his poor,unlucky country..he should work hard..but I am sure after doing some useful works for his people,he will like it and work more and more for a nice future..I support his brave heart..:-)..
