Raekwon’s debut album Only Built 4 Cuban Linx… will surely go down in Hip-Hop history, not simply because of the classic songs featured on it, but also because of the purple cassette tape on which it was released. Dubbed the “Purple Tape,” its unique clear purple shell quickly became a collector’s item. Now, fifteen years after its release, the legacy of the “Purple Tape” lives on through Rhymefest.

The Chicago rapper announced today that he will release a special edition red cassette tape of his upcoming sophomore album El Che, due out June 8 on dN|Be Entertainment. Rhymefest says that the decision to release the “Red Tape” is an attempt for him to bridge the golden era of Hip-Hop to the present, and more specifically, El Che. Rhymefest will also release a clear, prison-safe cassette tape that will use no screws or contraband materials as to bring the power of music and conscious thought to those behind bars. Both the “Red Tape” and the prison-safe tape are available for purchase at ElCheTheMovement.com, along with the CD and digital versions of the album as well.
