Rap veteran Sandra “Pepa” Denton recently shared her thoughts on up and coming rapper Nicki Minaj in an interview with Vibe Magazine. In the interview, Pepa explained that Nicki Minaj is too young to have music with a message.

“She reminds me of [Lil’ Kim]. Bold and you know… she’s young. And a lot of people are like ‘Oh what do you feel about her because of the message?’, but to me she hasn’t learned the message yet,” Pepa shared with Vibe Magazine. “[Salt-n-Pepa are] old in the game, we started out a little raw, so after a little while I’ve learned and changed because my audience changed.”

Pepa also revealed that having the backing of an all male crew may be influencing Nicki Minaj’s lyrical content.

“…And what happens when you have a male camp backing you? Yeah, you might be singing those kinds of lyrics,” Pepa explained. “That’s what happens when you have a male camp dictating how you should be.”

In her interview with Vibe, Pepa, who recently starred in the VH1 reality show Let’s Talk About Pep, hinted at possibly returning for a new reality show. She’s also currently at work in the studio recording Salt-N-Pepa’s next studio album.
