Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 11/22/2009
Michael Jackson looks platinum-plausible after three weeks of the This Is It soundtrack,
Michael's sister Janet brought her #1's collection to the Top 20 for a debut. The double disc collection features hits assisted by Q-Tip, Busta Rhymes and Nelly.
Speaking of, The Black Eyed Peas went to #25 with The E.N.D. The Electro-Pop work may be a departure from even the group's more recent two albums, but the
Jay-Z slid to #30 for the first time with Blueprint 3. The Atlantic Records-distributed effort is within 100,000 units ofBlack Eyed Peas, for overall 2009 sales. After that, all that remains is another 100,000-plus units in Eminem's Relapse as 2009's top-selling Rap album.

After over a decade, the legendary Rakim returned with at #61, with The Seventh Seal. The album, released through Bay Area's SMC Records, featured an appearance from Maino, and production from Jake One, Nottz and longtime affiliate Nick Wiz.
DXnext alum Wale maintained Top 100 with his Attention : Deficit. Last week the album sold under 30,000 units, as the rapper's management claimed the label under-shipped the album considerably, limiting sales. The rapper may surpass 50,000 units next week, with a strong Black Friday showing.
Veteran independent Rap titans Slug and Murs (as Felt) returned for a third tributary album, this one to famed '80s and '90s Puerto Rican actress Rosie Perez. This released, produced entirely by Aesop Rock, is the duo's first charting Felt release. Tech N9ne crossed the 50,000 benchmark with his K.O.D. release. The album has been one of the best-selling independent Rap releases of 2009, put out through the Kansas City veteran's Strange Music. In one of the last slots on the Top 200, Lil Boosie scanned another 3,000 of one of Warner Brothers' most successful Rap outings since the Asylum merger in Superbad: The Return Of Boosie Bad Azz.

jay's em's and wayne's all leaked, they all went number 1 (ross sucks but he did too). 50 was a decent rapper with an amazing story to tell. the only problem was he told the story so well in his first effort anything further became redundant. he aint 100% real either dude has a bunch of weed songs and says hes never been a weed smoker

I've heard the album and while it was better than Game, Fat Joe and Ross's efforts, the material itself wasn't any different than any of his other albums. Not like anyone expected it to be, but when your album gets delayed several times, the consumer assumes that the artist is using that time to drastically improve the negative elements of that album. I think he should have just released the original version of BISD, then included the axed songs on a separate disc.

I find it funny that Rick Ross believes he crushed 50, that he believes 50's career is over. I'm not a 50 Cent fan, but Rick, your "Deeper than rap" album only sold about 100k in it's first week too. As a matter of fact, DTR has been out since April and it's only sold alil bit over 300k units. Y'all say 50 always starts beef just to sale albums, but let's not forget it was Rick Ross (or Officer Ricky as 50 calls him) who started the beef. Rick is so delusional, clearly you didn't win the beef, you didn't end 50's career, Rick you making yourself look stupid.

Don't believe leaks affected his sales slike that. Look at the success of his singles compared to Jay-z. 50 released 2 singles from the album. None cracked the top 10. Absolutely none. Even the ones that didn't appear on the album, like "I get it in" and "Get up" also didn't crack the top 10. That clearly shows 50's momentum was gone. On the other hand, 2 of Jay-z's songs from b3 reached the top ten, and one (Or 2 I think) was/were #1. Given that, I'll say leaks didn't play a major role in the sales disappointment. He's just a flash in the pan.

I'm curious why you think Kanye west reaches a wider audience. He sells, but not at the rate 50 was going. If anything, you could say West has more fans at this stage. He's also willing to make music that goes againsn't the grain of typical hip hop. As far as making money off others albums, I find it border line retarded how anyone in their right mind would agree to a deal like that. Maybe for one album, but 3 later?
Young Buck probably never officially got out of his contract, so he'll crawl back for one more advance. His last album flopped though, so whatever % 50's getting won't be anything to call a press conference over. All in all, 50 is set for life. But consumers don't care how much an artist is worth. They want good music, not recycled music.

I think West has a wider audience in the way he was able to do '808 & Heartbreak' in the way he is on alot of other artists songs i.e. Wayne and Drake. I think BISD was aimed at 50's core audience, granted though he had a few songs on there specifically for commercial success. But the problem is only 1 of them has been put out properly 'Baby by me' and you can't sell an album off that!
I reckon alot of people would hear a preview of the first few songs on the album and loose interest because gangster rap is'nt obviously selling any more. As a 50 fan im glad he came with what he did instead of another CURTIS which as a 50 fan i admit was god damn aweful (apart from 'i get money' which he should of saved for this album).
Listen to the album though, its not recycled music its a hot album!
