In a stark example of the harsh economic times, Detroit, MI has been unable to bury more than 60 bodies that lay unclaimed in the Wayne County morgue, due to next of kin's inability to afford the funeral arrangements.

Former Universal Motown VP Shanti Das has taken it upon herself to help the families afford the expense, with the help of her May We Rest In Peace nonprofit organization.

"They were stacked up like shoes in a closet," described Das to CNN.  "It was such a horrific situation. I thought, 'Oh my god, we have to try and restore some dignity to these families.'"

The organization has raised $6,000 in a matter of weeks, bringing the number of unburied bodies from 67 to 52. Also assisting with the cause are artists such as Busta Rhymes and Akon.

"Without these additional funds...they'd be in our cooler system," said Al Samuels, the morgue's chief investigator, of those laid to rest.
