The Mummy Returns

September 12th, 2001 | DVD Release | Author:

The sequel to the smash hit has all the traits that make a good adventure movie: suspense, non-stop action, a love story, and tons of big budget special effects. What also makes The Mummy Returns a good movies is the light-heartedness tone the film takes. Brendan Fraser has the successful qualities of a constantly tormented hero: he’s at times very intelligent and at others stubborn but Fraser seems to be able to pull off a character that seems very swashbuckling and heroic.

The story is set in 1933, 10 years after the events of the first film. Rick O'Connell (Fraser) is now married to Evelyn (Weisz) and the couple has settled in London, where they are raising their 8-year-old son Alex. When a chain of events finds the corpse of Imhotep (Vosloo) resurrected in the British Museum, the mummy Imhotep walks the earth once more, determined to fulfill his quest for immortality. But another force has also been set loose in the world... one born of the darkest rituals of ancient Egyptian mysticism, and even more powerful than Imhotep. When these two forces clash, the fate of the world will hang in the balance, sending the O'Connells on a desperate race to save the world from unspeakable evil, and rescue their son before it is too late.

All in all, The Mummy Returns has a Indiana Jones-type adventure feel and like any many good summer movies the effects and stunts are big. The action picks up right from the very beginning and almost never lets go through out the movie which is just the way a good summer action movie should do. The reason why this movie succeeds is that its fun, pure and simple. It doesn’t get too serious nor does it ever take itself too seriously. What it wants is for the audience to have fun and that’s what it delivers
