Double Take

September 4th, 2001 | DVD Release | Author:

Double Take tries to hard to be a good action movie but fails miserably. All the slow-mo camera work is a bit cliche in this post-John Woo and post-Matrix Hollywood so the action sequences in Double Take don’t seem that impressive. Its an action movie that tries to be too big and can’t manage to pull it off and Eddie Griffin and Orlando Jones aren’t the first names to pop into mind when it comes to action. That being said the movie’s plot seems a bit forced and at times the audience seems to be made to accept certain situations and take them for granted.

Double Take concerns junior executive Daryl Chase (Jones) who is set up for murder and goes on the run. Freddy Tiffany (Griffin) is a supposed street hustler who comes to Daryl’s aid and by switching identities Daryl escapes capture by the police. Falling further and further into a web of deceit and danger Daryl must decide who to trust in order to survive. The plot may seem simple and it is; everything is conveniently explained in the end and its this overdone way of doing action movies that makes Double Take seem so stale and uninteresting.

All in all, Double Take is a victim of its own high hopes and low abilities. It tries to create a Gibson/Glover or Chan/Tucker odd couple action team but it fails because Jones’ character gains no sympathy from the audience even with him being in his situation and Eddie Griffin comes off as an annoying pest rather than a hero. In the end, Double Take is a worthy rent if you are really desperate to see something and you’ve already seen everything.
