April 25th, 2005.
This was the day when the best-selling R&B girls group went from a trio to a duo. It was simple; a car crash leaving Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes the only casualty. In Lopes’ own words, she believe that there was a spirit chasing her. How do I know? Well, on May 19th at 9pm, VH1 and VH1 Soul will premiere the compelling and documented Last Days of Left Eye. Filmed during a 30-day spiritual retreat in Honduras, the TLC front-woman died 26 days into filming.
This intimate portrayal finds Lauren Lazen [Tupac] piecing in Lopes’ unedited film and ties it in with an overview of the artist’s life and career. HHDX humbly thanks VH1 for an exclusive look at the documentary before it airs nationally.
Lisa’s stunning features shined through ever since she was a baby. Armed with a camera and surrounded by her closest friends and family, Left Eye offers an intimate look into her life, her loves and her career. An unstable relationship with her father enabled the young artist-in-training to develop a strong tolerance to liquor. But it was that same household that fueled her creativity. With a mother and father both musically and artistically inclined, Lisa Lopes was a natural. She took that God-given talent and linked up with Tionne Watkins and Ronzanda Thomas to form TLC and become international celebrities.
But the Rock Doc isn’t all schmaltz and glitz. Lopes discusses her bouts with alcoholism, which cultivated multiple personalities within her self. She is blunt about her dealings with the record company, breaks down the groups bankruptcy problems and challenges her comrades and peers. From elaborating on why producer, Dallas Austin almost didn’t make it on the groups second album to saying that she was against "Creep" being a released single; Left Eye was a controversial star.
What emerges through this DVD is a surprising journey into the mind of a supernova. During the time in Honduras, Lopes search for deeper meaning within herself, allows her to be honest about numerous personal matters. She elaborates on stories about the comfort she found in rehab, she speaks publicly about her relationship with Andre Rison and talks about what led her to set fire to their Atlanta home in December 1994.
Most interestingly enough, Lopes discusses her internal happiness. A heartbreaking scene develops when Lisa shows the word hate etched into the songstress’ skin. The saddening story behind it was that the word originally used to show love -- to describe her affection for Andre Rison. After multiple disappointments, the holder of a Bic razor blade -- Lisa Lopes etched over her flesh, knowing of the end results.
The LaFace trio was signed in 1992 and released three albums that put them as the top-selling female R&B group of all times. With Lisa in dire straits, the star journeyed to Honduras for healing. Now practicing yoga, astrology and numerology, Lisa was spent on the intent of making personal changes and focusing on self. As more and more revelations were being made available to the young starlet, she believed that time was cautiously plotting its course, with her as it’s main lead.
An unsuspecting fear crept in. Restlessness affected the group, whom Lisa was intent on influencing change. Worst being, the night before her passing, Lopes and a van full of friends of family, hit and ultimately killed a young Honduran child.
…The last name of the boy was Lopes…
The last ten minutes of the documentary even shows footage of Lisa losing control of the car that she was driving, which ultimately killed her. Despite her untimely death, Lisa’s story lives on within the capture reel of film used and in the hearts of the millions of fans that still sing her praises.
The dreamer who always reached for the stars gives of herself, always present, yet never fully knowing. It is still a tragedy that someone so young, so bright, would burn out. But that’s what supernova’s do.
Last Days of Left Eye is the newest film in the VH1 Rock Doc franchise. The high-end feature-length documentaries continue to reveal the untold story in the history of music. So, be sure to set your TIVOs and tune in to VH1 and/or VH1 Soul on May 19th at 9pm.
