Spiderman 2

July 2nd, 2004 | Theatre Release | Author: Albert McCluster III

I should have known when I got to the screening room door and there was a federal marshal standing there that this was going to be a good movie! After having my cell-phone and 2-way checked out for hidden recording devices. It was no wonder I felt like I was at airport security, the only thing he didn't check was my shoes.

But, I digress I just want to say that Spiderman 2 is the MUST SEE MOVIE of the summer. I just don't throw that phrase around with all of the crap that comes out every year. But, this time Sony/Columbia pictures definitely got it right

The film starts out with the face of Mary Jane Watson, who 2 years after the terror of the Green Goblin from the first film has moved up in the world as a model and actress. While Harry Osbourne has taken over the reigns of OSCORP and still harbors a deadly grudge against Spiderman for the death of his father.

Our hero, Peter Parker isn't doing too good you can see it in his eyes in his first scene. For you see, Spiderman is now a moped riding, pizza delivery guy. Pete is more pathetic in this film than the first where he was simply a geeky 110lb weakling. Now though Peter Parker can bench-press a Mack truck, can't catch a break.

Whether it's losing his job as a pizza deliver guy, because he was late with a delivery due to chasing criminals as Spiderman OR getting hoodwinked by Daily Bugle Editor J. Jonah Jameson who buys Spidey pictures from Parker for a song and then plasters them on the front page calling Spiderman a menace or it's missing dates with Mary Jane because he's Spiderman!

He just can't catch a break because he's Spiderman.

Power and Responsibility has always been the main theme of Spiderman from comics to film and Peter asks himself "What about me? Aren't I supposed to be happy?" Soon, our hero decides to toss in his spandex not only because Spidey is causing him so much trouble with his love life. But, also it seems that he's losing his spider powers anyway.

His red-ringed eyes have returned to the blurry vision of someone who needs glasses his famed wall-crawling abilities fail him and in mid-swing his webs won't work. There is a hilarious scene on an elevator where Spidey (after his webs have quit on him) looks uncomfortable as a fellow passenger quizzes him about his "neat" Spiderman costume the conversation ends with Spidey saying "It rides in the crotch, sometimes."

Now of course no one will really be going to see Spiderman 2 just for the twenty-something angst and emotion so, the films director has also thrown in a little action for you

Enter Dr. Otto Octavius, who is out to bring fusion energy into reality by utilizing four robotic tentacles that are attached to his central nervous system. Dr. Octavius' research is being funded by Peter's friend, Harry Osbourne, who hopes that the good doctor's research will make a mark and profit for OSCORP.

Of course there is a catastrophic accident in which Dr Octavius' wife is killed and the robotic tentacles are fused to his spinal column and unbeknownst to everyone, each tentacle has a mind of it's own and they begin to bring out the dark side in Doc Ock.

Soon, Ock is wrecking havoc and robbing banks to further fund his research but, Spidey is nowhere to be seen as a sanitation worker brings a familiar red and blue spandex to J. Jonah Jameson, telling him he found it in the trash

But, Doc Ock draws our hero out of self-imposed exile for a fight on a subway train that by it's end will have your heart swelling for Peter Parker and Spiderman.

With the CGI animation and effects, this film could stand on it's own. But, the storyline really has you caring about this poor kid who has been "burdened" with these amazing powers and crushing responsibility in the end I found myself asking "Could I do that?" Through all the problems and pain could I be responsible enough with such power to do what's right and seek no reward for myself.

If you love action movies and good content you DEFINITELY need to see Spiderman 2. Oh in case you don't know, there will be a Spiderman 3.
