Mayweather vs. Hatton: Tale Of The Tape

posted December 08, 2007 12:00:00 AM CST | 0 comments

Two men are set to go head to head in what may be the biggest day in both of their respective careers. The day when the world will see the results of the much hyped match-up. Prior to the big day, insults are exchanged to amplify the excitement. One man has a whole lot of lip while the other refuses to engage in a war of words and would rather let his attributes do the talking. The media spins the stories behind the characters to create a hero and a villain. Sides are chosen, tempers flare and words are exchanged by fans of both.

When the big day comes, all that there will be is one man against the other. No entourages, no help, no women, no blingnothing. All that stands in the way on the road to greatness is the opponent . A loss may not destroy an individuals career but will surely put a damper on any progression from here on out.

We know what youre thinking Kanye West vs. 50 Cent right? Wrong. Were talking about Floyd Mayweather, Jr. vs. Ricky Hatton. On December 8th, the two will go head to head in what will be career defining moments in both boxers lives.

As far as a media attraction went, there was nothing bigger than De La Hoya vs. Mayweather. But if you want to see a fight tune in December 8th when Floyd Mayweather fights Ricky Hatton live on HBO Pay-Per-View.

The Right Hand.

Keep an eye on Mayweathers lead right. Mayweather will often paw away with his jab to find his range and once hes comfortable, the lead right hand will come into play. When it does, and if it lands, you can pretty much call it a night for the opponent. Not only is it a more powerful punch, but it lands clean and definitely gives judges a reason to hand rounds over to Mayweather. If that lead right turns into an overhand right, you can anticipate a late round TKO from Mayweather.

Defense Wins Championships

Mayweather
s defense may be the best since Pernell Sweet Pea Whitaker. Its hard to hit Mayweather. Not just because hes quick and makes you miss, but because he gives you nothing to hit. His ability to roll his shoulder and effectively cover up is frustrating for fighters who throw a lot of punches. Ask De La Hoya who threw a high number of punches but never landed anything clean.

Fighters like Hatton can be tailor-made for Mayweather

Although Castillo gave Mayweather a rough time in their first fight, Mayweather made easy work of Castillo in the rematch. Fighters with a brawling mentality give slick boxers like Mayweather endless opportunities to counter and land cleanly. The only fighters to truly give Mayweather the fits were fighters with similar gifts as he (Zab Judah). Unfortunately, without the ring intelligence of a Mayweather, those attributes are nullified. Theres a possibility that Mayweather can make Ricky Hatton look like Arturo Gatti before the night is over.

Mayweather
s Hand Speed

Richard Pryor
once made a joke about Muhammad Ali that you only would see his punches once they were coming back into position after thrown. Mayweather possesses similar attributes. It doesnt take long for Mayweather to capitalize on a mistake and make his opponent pay with four and five punch combinations. Not only are those punches quick, they are very accurate and have caused many opponents to become extremely cautious before engaging Mayweather. If Hatton gets hit early, expect Mayweather to cruise to an easy victory.

Hattons pressure is key.

Hatton
never tires and is ruthless when it comes to body work. The only fighter to ever give Mayweather problems was Castillo, who applies similar pressure that Hatton does. And while Hatton may smother Mayweather, his speed is also underrated and should allow him to keep pace. He simply cant allow Mayweather to breathe, and if it resorts to a phone booth fight, Hatton becomes even more dangerous. To be effective, Mayweather needs distance to let his hands go. Hatton does not.

Hatton
will be the bigger fighter on fight night.

Not that size is always a determining factor but consider this: Mayweather walks around at 147 so for him to fight at 147 isnt all that difficult. Hatton was up to 185 before the fight. Hell easily weigh in at the 147 limit but watch for him to gain 10-12 pounds overnight. With Hatton being a pressure fighter who will lean and hold Mayweather often, expect Hatton to take Mayweather into deep water and hope that hell wear him down with his weight advantage. It should dull Mayweathers power considerably and give Hatton a decent edge in power. As long as it doesnt nullify his speed, Hattons size could be a significant factor.

Work, Work, Work

Hatton
is always active. Mayweather fights a bit smarter so doesnt always let his hands go. If the fight looks even, expect the judges to pay close attention to Hattons work rate. If he out punches Mayweather, it wont matter who lands more as the judges tend to give the aggressor who comes forward the benefit of the doubt.

Body Punching

There arent more committed fighters to the body than Ricky Hatton (Aside from Miguel Cotto). Hatton loves to work the body and if anyone knows how to negate speed and wear a fighter down, they know that work to the body is the key. If Hatton remains focused on wearing Mayweathers body down early, it will become increasingly difficult for Mayweather to throw punches in bunches late. Body work will also keep Mayweather from moving around as much as he likes and if stationary, Mayweather can become a sitting duck for the relentless pressure Hatton will apply.

In the end, Saturday night will reveal all. HipHopDX wants to know what YOU think...
