DMX: It’s Not A Game
"Yeah I Like Animals Better Than People Sometimes, Especially Dogs..." -DMX
When the dog came on the scene he brought something fresh and new to it. He brought Honesty, aggression, feeling and God. Not many artists can merge all of the above into an image without being characterized as a sell out not real or just plain old fake; but then again no one is like DMX.
After the success of Cradle to The Grave and a verbal war with Ja Rule, X continues to impress us without the flash and glitter. Hes just X. and his newest release The Grand Champ, due out on September 16th fuses Xs persona along with his heart and soul to create what some say may be his last album. When asked about the release and who worked on it with him X says, Ummm people that I like, you know what Im saying, people that I work with are the same people Ive always work with. Grease, P.K., Swiss. You know. I always pick up new cats. Whoever got a hot beat. Im not dick riding. Im not chasing down the same nigga everybody else chasing down in order to get one beat. It aint that serious. Im not looking for a beat to sell my music. X has never sought out the popular to sell his music. I mean this nigga was the first person to represent animals in the form of Dogs and bark on a record. If that isnt originality I dont know what is.
When asked about the first single and how the concept came about X states D brought it to me in the studio. I was close to being done. I was pretty much like close to being done. I wasnt planning on writing or coming with no new songs. But as soon as I heard the beat, it was like theres no way I can get away from this. I gotta blaze this one. Just like, theres another one I just did a couple days ago. Its about the blow. As soon as I heard the beat, I was like theres no way I can walk away from this beat. Theres no way.
So with another blazin single and Album to come, X has been traveling the world to do what he does. X tells why he pick the places he visits so meticulously. I pick them for different reasons. I pick each city for different reasons. Arizona for instance is the desert. Its like peaceful. I can really get into the thought process out there. I can ride the quads you know. Ride all day, rap all night you know, Arizonas good for the soul. I went to Chicago because Chicago was the hood. When I thought about ghetto, I though about Chicago. I hadnt been there in a while. So I said, let me go out there. I met my man Kato out there, rest in peace. You know.
As X speaks about Kato it is clearly evident that from a man who doesnt usually big any one up there was mad love for his peoples in is soul. He says, First, he was a friend to me. You know what Im saying. He was a friend to my family. His wife, my wife friends. Hes a husband, father and CEO of Denaro Records. Record label out of Chicago, got a couple artists just got signed. Just got a deal. That was my dawg. Dawgs for life. Kato rest in peace.
X really is a busy man as his artistic talents keep him working. He speaks of a new film hes working on and states that in-Never Die Alone.people can expect to see what theyve never seen out of me in a movie, in a character. You know. Its not what Ive been doing, you know, thus far. But its definitely something interesting, new. Something I think I carried. I carried better than my last two roles. Something I can relate to more. I read the books. Its the first of the authors, Donald Goines, books to be made into a movie. Im honored to be the first to be given permission by his estate to do that. Like I said, its not what my fans have seen from me in movies. I think besides Belly, this is like the realest role Ive ever done. Its real with an undeniable truth to it. Its wrong, with an undeniable right to it. Thats what it is. You know. Thats what truth is.
He also tells about his son being in the film with him. My 10 year old son, Xavier. He playsHe plays my son. He plays the younger version because the son is also younger in the movie. Theres a time lapse of 20 years, I think in the movie. You know, so Im a young guy then Im a older guy. So he plays the younger version of my son. And I bust him in the head with a bottle, like Sit down, dont you get up. Talk greasy to him, all crazy. I asked him while he was doing it if he enjoyed doing it. Because just because Im doing it doesnt mean its something Im going to push on my kids. Youre going to do this and ... I want to let them pretty much be themselves and help them along the way. and he enjoyed doing it, wants to do more of it. So Im going to be there for him.
So at the end of the day how does X feel about his obstacles and accomplishments? Im sick of this fucking industry, you know what Im saying. Its run by the Devil and 99% of everybody you deal with is a snake. It gets tired after a while you know what Im saying. I know the lord has a calling on my life, you know what Im saying. Im not going to do both.
What are his final thoughts? Final thought.ummm this is it. Its the end of Dog world. When you fight your dog in the ring, each time he wins, he becomes a champ. One time champ, two time champ, three time champ. Im a four-time champ right now. When he gets five wins in the ring, under his belt, he becomes a Grand Champ. Thats why its called Grand Champ. Because this is going to be my fifth professional win. For me, Ive done pretty much everything there was to be done with this. Its going somewhereIm not really downward. Feel me. You know. To my fans, its not like Im a disappear off the face of the earth. If you fuck wit me yo, fuck wit me for real. Walk with me.
