Ray J: Talk Like Sex

posted April 15, 2008 12:00:00 AM CDT | 0 comments

Out from under the heavy shadow of his older sisters singing success, Ray J has created his own self-sufficient fame. And while he still struggles to gain respect within the industry and media after being known as Brandis little brother for so long; this singer/ actor [and ex boyfriend of Kim Kardashian] doesnt mind being laughed at; because all the while hes laughing his way to the bank.

After selling his infamous sex-tape with Kim and making millions, then penning a deal for his own record label, Knockout Entertainment [a multi-million dollar collaboration with Epic/Koch Records and Shaquille ONeals Deja 34 Entertainment company] Ray J is now focused on his fourth album All I Feel, which features guest appearances by The Game and Styles P, among others.

HipHopDX caught up with the self-proclaimed joker to talk about all the juicy details of his romance with Kim, his feelings towards her new boyfriend [NFL player Reggie Bush], his beef with Chris Stokes and Marques Houston, Lil Kim, and the many sides of the man we call Ray J.

HipHopDX.com: So you got the new single out Sexy Can I, it's doing pretty well on radio right nowcan you talk a little bit about how the collaboration with Young Berg came about?
Ray J: Berg
and I was friends. We met and just became friends and I was featured in his video, I did a cameo for Sexy Lady. And then we started working on some music together. I told him I wanted him to get on my album whenever I got a chance to get down. So in creating Sexy Can I, I knew he had a song called Sexy Lady, so I wanted to keep the sexy movement going. So I told him to get on the song and he came in and made it magical.

DX: Is the recent mixtape, Un-Kut, a reflection of how the album sounds?
RJ:
No way. Not at all. On the mixtape, I wasnt even singing at all. I did like a two-second vocal.

DX: Let's talk about some of the lyrics, because I have to admit Im a lil mad at you right now. [Laughs]
RJ:
Uh-oh. [Laughs]

DX: On Snakes in the Grass you say such beautifully eloquent lines as so heres a little weed and a little bit of E and stuff/ make sure you dont bleed and stuff/ make sure its not your bloody week, you slut.
RJ:
Yeah, make sure you dont do that shit

DX: umm there also the classic, She told me at 3 oclock to meet her at the Pizza Hut/ she was real freaky, told me do her in the butt/ so I did her in her butt, butt/ right in the back of the Pizza Hut, Hut.
RJ:
Yeah

DX: Ummm...oh, then theres the poignant, I'm feelin like a kicker and im bout to kick a punt in a nasty lil bitch wit a pretty lil' cuntwhat the hell is that all about Ray J? Like, seriously.
RJ:
Its like you said, those were some great lines! Im feelin like and Im bout to kick a punt in a nasty lil' bitch wit' a pretty lil' cunt. That is just classic right there! If Biggie had said that, that woulda been like the biggest line of the year!

DX: I mean, I hope we can both recognize you're no Stevie Wonder , but did you have to go that deeply into the lowest gutter?
RJ:
[Laughs] Listen, it was for free!

DX: [Laughs] So you pay for what you get?
RJ:
Nah, but it was some free shit! It was straight for the streets, it was straight for entertaining the cats into that dark, nasty world. And thats where I was at that time. That was the world I was living in for those few months and in that song I was going through that with my girlfriends always being in that [menstrual] week. It was an everlasting week and I just kept getting irritated. [Laughs]

DX: Talk to me, honey, is it a cry for help? You sound like someone with a lot of anger and pain. Did one too many females break your heart?
RJ:
Yeah, I been heartbroken a 150,000,000 timesnah, Im just playin. [Laughs] I just play around. I dont really have any seriousness or none of that shit.

DX: But with lyrics like that I really wonder what your parents think of your mixtape. Especially with your father, Willie Norwood, being a Gospel singer.
RJ:
I mean, I dont really play that for them. They might hear a little bit of it and cut it off. They dont really like listening to that though. But I got some nice heart-felt songs on my album though. Heart-felt ballads, great concepts and situationsits totally different that the mixtape; those are two different sides to me.

DX: Now on another track Settle the Score you have quite a bit to say and you even call out names. Theres the quote Fuck Chris Stokes, and fuck Marques Hou/ 'Cause niggas is some bitches, tryin to clone the crew/ Some bitches told me they do each other in the booty/ Ain't no denying that them niggas is fruity where does this beef stem from?
RJ:
I meanI was just sayin that some bitches told me thatyou know [sings] Some bitches told me they do each other in the booty/ Ain't no denying that them niggas act fruity

DX: But what Im saying iswhat did they ever do to you to have you call them out like that?
RJ:
Oh, a lot of shit! As far as business and money is concerned, they know what they did. They know whats up, and they owe. They owe. So I was expressing myself because I was tired of keeping it under wraps. I just wanted to put it out there and move on. But now I cant even legally talk about it anymore because its so outta control.

DX: Okaywell on gossip sites youve been called names like The wackest z-list publicity whore.
RJ:
Wowman

DX: Yeah, that was pretty harshand I know that you told me that you deliberately act a fool on the mixtape so is the mixtape purely for shock value to get people talking about you again?
RJ:
Its just for whoever can enjoy it as entertainment. It was nothing about shock value or anything like that; we good. We livin good, we makin hit records; its not a cry for attention we just keep doin us. Its not on me that people write about it on the Internet and expose it on every website that exists. They obviously are entertained by it. So Im obviously giving the media something that they like and something that they want.

DX: Well moving away from that for a secondeveryone at HipHopDX knows about my huge girl-crush on your ex Kim Kardashian
RJ:
Oh, you like women?

DX: [Laughs] No, Im married, to a man, but I can appreciate the beauty of another female.
RJ:
So you a Kim K fan, thats what's up

DX: I think shes absolutely gorgeous, and I think her reality show is cute too so because I like herIm almost gonna feel bad about asking you some of the stuff Im about to ask you.butthats my job.
RJ:
I feel you.

DX: So first offdid you or did you not pee on Kim Kardashian? A rumor went around that it's part of the un-edited sex tape but I dont know.
RJ:
Man, you gotta see the tape; it was like a waterfall. I was standin, like, on top of the roofand her mouth was open and everything.it was crazy[Laughs] Im just playing[Laughs] Im just fuckin wit youhell naw, I didnt pee on Kim.

DX: [Laughs]
RJ:
Fuck no. [Laughs] I dont pee on women. And thats why on the mixtape I was like I'ma pee in your muthafuckin womb, Imma pee on you" [Laughs] Im just laughin like its a jokewe just jokin. Just takin' shots at the whole media; just throwin it right back at em.

DX: In the song All my Bitchez Cash on the mixtape you sing about your ex giving you an STD, was that something you really went through? and if so was that directed at Kim?
RJ:
Ahhhh! Hold on, Im still burning, let me get some of my pills.

DX: [Laughs]
RJ:
[Laughs] Nah, Im just playing. [Laughs] That wasnt directed at her. I was just coming up with different concepts, you know? Stuff that people go through in life when they got an ex wit a dirty situation and they not using protection, and all of a sudden you find yourself at the doctors office because you been burning all week long then you gotta take some of these pills to calm it down. You know what Im saying?

DX: Um, not really, actually. [Laughs]
RJ:
Im an Eminem fan. So I took a lot of the stuff that I was hearing on his albums ad tweaked it for the mixtapeit wasnt nothing personal at all.

DX: Whats your relationship with Kim like these days?
RJ:
Oh its great. We love each other.

DX: Stop lying to me Ray J .
RJ:
[Laughs]We do! We love each other!

DX: I read on Mediatakeout.com recently that Kim is upset with you for still talking about the sex tape and that supposedly a conversation was overheard in which Reggie Bush claimed he was gonna handle you and the situation; how do you respond to that?
RJ:
I mean, Im still talkin bout it right? [Laughs] The thing is, she had her chance to talk about it all year long. I laid low, I didnt talk about. She had her run; thats why she got a TV show now. She was talkin about it and livin the life. Thats why she did Playboy and got butt naked and showed her pussy and her titties! So actions speak louder than words; Im not the one. I laid low. I didnt need that attention; I didnt need that reality show. I turned down reality shows. I turned down being a "porno guy/director," and I coulda've took three-to-five million dollars to do the deal and I turned all that down. Im just doing music. I got a top five single out now, Im comin real good with the album. I feel like God is good. I feel like I made the right decision. As far as the media goes, and what I say [and whatnot]I just be havin fun, Im just clownin. Im usually not serious when I talk shit, Im just havin fun.

DX: Do you feel like you made Kim Kardashian who she is today? Because if it wasnt for the sex tapeI mean, lets be honest
RJ:
Exactly! Lets be honest! Im sayin, When you said you were a Kim K fan I could've patted myself on the back!....but I didnt. I didnt because I think the same [as you do]. Just like you think shes beautiful; I thought that too. I thought she was a superstar, I thought she was a great person and I felt that television would really catch a hold to her. So me and you is on the same page, baby.

DX: So was the falling out between the two of you the sex tape? Or were you already broken up at that point?
RJ:
I mean, its all good. Its not a "falling out;" it just is what it is. I still got love for her, and she got love for me. And if she say she dont shes lying. I wish her success

DX: Okay, now moving onwhats your love life like now?
RJ:
Its just on hold right now. Im just really focused on the music and focused on running this company. This new album is independently produced and put out under my label Knockout with Koch and Shaquille ONeals label Deja 34. We're happy to be back on the map so strong and we just wanna keep this ball rollin.

DX: Good, goodhows Lil Kim?
RJ:
Shes good. I love Kim. She was one of my mentors going into this album. I started out working on this album in her crib in L.A. And thats sort of when we created the song Sexy Can I. Me, her and one of her writers named Shamelle. So hats off to Lil Kim; I love you to death, girl.

DX: Is that in love or just love?
RJ:
Its beyond in love. When you got someone thats like fam, youd do whatever for them.

DX: So are there wedding bells in the future? Not necessarily with Kim, but in general are you looking to settle down soon?
RJ:
Hell yeah, there will be wedding bells in the future.

DX: So whos gonna be the woman to finally hold you down?
RJ:
She knows who she is, she just got a boyfriend right now. [Laughs]

DX: Oh really? Is it the girl from 702?
RJ:
Nah. Shes a beautiful girl, though. You should hear her voice, Oh my God.

DX: So she is a singer?
RJ:
You should hear her voice.wowwait, no! Shes not a singer. Shes a reality star. Yeah, thats ita reality star.

DX: You just makin shit up now, Ray J
RJ:
No, Im not, she really is. Shes a reality star.

DX: Yeah, well, well see about that.So after you find that woman to hold you down can you promise me youll stop singing angry lyrics anal sex in fast food parking lots?
RJ:
Listen, that was a one-time line! [Laughs] I know it didnt sit with you well, but thats why Im tryin to say we ain't talkin bout classy ladies like you. We talkin bout the females that look at your man and want to take that nigga from a classy female. We talkin bout them bitches! Thats exactly what Kay Slay saidwe ain't talkin bout the classy women with a head on their shoulders. We talkin about sluts, and whores, and dirtbags, and prostitutes, and shit like that. But thats what [the mixtape] was about. The album isnt like that.

DX: So tell me, what can we expect from the new album?
RJ:
You can definitely expect it to be edgy, just not as edgy as the mixtape. Im gonna go ahead and say the mixtape wasnt edgy; it was over the top. [Laughs]

DX: Thats what Im sayin! I agree it was a little over the top.
RJ:
It wasnt even a little; It was a lot.

DX: [Laughs] I know! And I really didnt even expect that from you. Maybe that was the whole point of the project, maybe thats what you were going for?
RJ:
Right. But on this one, on the album, I got lyrics like [sings] She climb up on the pole/ Then she drop and do the splits/ How she make that pussy talk/ Baby, damn you on some new shit.

DX: [Rolls eyes] Right, because thats so much better.
RJ:
But its sexier. Its a sexier vibe. Its not like [sings] A pretty lil' bitch! / And a nasty lil' cunt!/ And I dont give a fuck! You should know this / I got a lil' slut! / And she stay in Minnesota. [Laughs]

DX: [Laughs]
RJ:
Even though, I love that record.

DX: Do you? Thats good Im glad someone does.
RJ:
[Laughs] Oh shit! [Laughs]

DX: [Laughs] I love you Ray J; youre a good sport.
RJ:
Thats what Im sayin! So in the interview, you cant make me out to be a pedophile. You cant be sayin you love me right now, then I go on HipHopDX.com and Im sounding like an ignorant pedophile! Just you know Im just playin on most of this shitwait, you didnt hear the end of Willies shit on the mixtape did you?

DX: I dont think so.
RJ:
Yo, thats when it gets the most graphic!

DX: Oh Jesus
RJ:
You gotta check that out. But then dont ever listen to it again. [Laughs] Just go and get the new album and dont ever go back [to the mixtape] again.
