After the critical success of the Diddy-hosted Biggie CD, Unbelievable, I wanted to do something creative as a follow up … but wasn’t sure what to do. One of my designers, Glen Infante, sent me a rough version of this Graduate cover and asked if I had any use for it. Originally I said no, but after consulting with my partner Terry Urban, we decided to attempt to put together a creative, intelligent mix project involving Kanye West. I’d like to note that in our opinion, Kanye has made the album of the year, hands down … and if you haven’t bought it yet, you’re missing out.

Here are some interesting liner notes from the creation of our mixtape ... The Graduate.

Kanye West & 50 Cent - Flashing Lights (Mick Boogie Mix)
This is the runaway favorite song on Kanye’s album … and with all the buzz about Kanye and 50, it made perfect sense to add 50 to this one. I dug around and found a 50 verse that kinda made sense with the topic and hooked it up. A lot of deejays around the world are now playing this in the club!

Kanye West & Jay-Z - Never Let Me Down (9th Wonder Remix)
I reached out to my homie Big Dho of The Justus League to see if 9th wanted to do a remix for this project. To my surprise, the idea was very well received and 9th sent us a bunch of songs for the project. This is my favorite one he did … he completely reinvented what we felt was a subpar song featuring Jay and gave it that boom bap it desperately needed. 9th definitely came through on this one!

Kanye West - Stronger (Original Unreleased Verse)
This is interesting cause it’s an alternate first verse. It’s not even close to being as dope as the single everyone knows and loves. But it’s a good listen, and shows how Kanye really is a perfectionist in the studio, redoing songs until they are perfect.

Kanye West, Little Brother & Lil Wayne - Breakin' My Heart (Mick Boogie Mix) (Prod. 9th Wonder)
One of my fave songs out now … and I like to rep for my homies Little Brother. So I added a quick Kanye verse that made sense, and voila. Plus 9th produced it! Shout to the LB fam… go buy their new album, The Getback!

Kanye West & Jay-Z - Everything I Am (Terry Urban Mix)
Terry killed this! Definitely one of the best up and coming talents on the DJ scene … his use of Jay-Z’s “You Don’t Know” on this was classic. It’s amazing how a verse from such a hard anthem fits so perfect on a smooth, soulful song like this. And it even makes sense from a topical point of view. Peep how it comes in … dopeness. Stuff like this is the reason I love creative mix projects.

Kanye West & Talib Kweli - The Bounce/Two Words (Live)
Talib Kweli sent me some joints for the cd…and this live audio was crazy. A younger Kanye freestyling to “The Bounce” while Kweli himself spit a verse to “Two Words.” Fans of Talib and Mos will love this.

Kanye West - Two Words (9th Wonder Remix)
Another great 9th remix. Replaying the melody from the original, this remix gives the song a whole new feel. It’s almost as good as the original to me. Continued on page 2 »
