Nelson Fowler

September 18th, 2008 | Author: Quinton Hatfield

Over the years Philadelphia has had many artists shed bring shine to what some call "the sixth borough." This is traceable all the way back to Will Smith bringing Hip Hop’s first Grammy home. As '90s-forged crews reconvene and decide their future, a new star must emerge for the new generation and changing times.

Nelson Fowler, 22, is living up to that full extent making music that is indeed for the everyday common people. This particular Philadelphia emcee and songwriter knows how to make that music that appeases male fans and wins over the ladies. Whether he's rapping about the state of Hip Hop or describing his city for outsiders, this confident young man says he's here to challenge the "Youngs" and "Lils," with music that's still accessible on a wider stage. DXnext offers you The Nelson Fowler Experience.

What Does Nelson Fowler Bring To Hip Hop: "The music speaks for itself that I’m different. I just want to get the music heard, it’s a good sound of feel good music. I don’t really put no name or label on my style. I like to try anything, but it’s just different, that’s what I call it."

Nelson Fowler Real Name, No Gimmicks: "I ain’t got time to play games with anybody. That’s just what it is: Nelson Fowler, no gimmicks. I had to look at myself and really check myself. Everybody now got a 'Young' and 'Lil,' it was like, 'Do I need to follow what everybody else is doing? Nah, I need to be ahead of everybody.' So to be ahead of everybody, it was like I’m a just keep my own name, I’m me."

Standing Out In Philadelphia's Hip Hop Scene: "Them dudes is doing they thing, but me I started at an early age so I was groomed early. I was learning things already and was already in the camp. Nobody right now is doing they own thing, everybody is following in the trends. Nobody is making music that’s believable and me, myself, I like to make music that’s believable. Nobody is being themselves, everybody is following what everybody else is doing. That’s why the music is kind of a little jacked up, but once I create a following I’ll set a bar for them to show everybody what’s going on."

The Deep Inspiration Behind His Song “Hip-Hop”: "To be honest, I hear people say 'Hip Hop is dead,' and it’s like, damn that’s crazy. Hip Hop is not just music, it’s our culture. This is what we are, what we represent, and what we stand for. Every time I get up and look in the mirror I’m fresh to death, that’s Hip Hop to me. I had to put it into a song and express how I really was feeling and it came out to be a crazy track."

Favorite Subject Matter: "I like to touch bases with females. Who don’t, man? [Laughs] I love to touch bases with the females, females give the best responses. Females definitely support artist, they show mad love."

Is His Own Indie Movement On The Way Once He Reaches Masses:
"It’s TPMG and that’s The Program Music Group. We doing what we got to do, Nelson Fowler Experience that’s the mixtape/album coming. I’m a show how it is man and not just showing the glory of it once you get on. We showing the grind too, we showing everything, because I grind man. Definitely look out for that Nelson Fowler Experience."

Has A Song Called “Shy Guy,” But Is That Really Him?:
[Laughs] "If I was shy guy, I wouldn’t be able to be a superstar. There ain’t no shy superstars. That’s all TPMG is trying to do man is reach out to the people. Nelson Fowler, I’m for the people, I’m like [Barack] Obama, they might as well vote me in. They might as well vote me in the game, I’m for the people."

Putting The 215 On His Back: "Philly already know what it is. I got a reputation man from my Bartram days in high school, to battling, and all that. I’ma do it for my city, because nobody really carried the torch man. Will Smith did it, but now it’s time for a new generation to come and do what he did. We got to show that we can uphold this torch, because ain’t nobody doing it man. I feel as though somebody got to do it. I feel as though Nelson Fowler, me personally will show Philly the light man."

Status One Year From Today:
"I would love to be on top. [Laughs] To be honest with you, in the studio working and having the chance to let the public receive some of this good word. Being some up and coming talent that’s hot getting love from the radio station. They not blocking me out, they giving me some airplay showing me love. That these industry cats is really recognizing that it’s some talent out here that’s trying to make their mark like let me shine."
