The Game isn’t making it easy for women to make their mark in the entertainment industry. Wouldn’t Get Far off of the album, Doctor’s Advocate certainly calls into question certain “video vixen’s” motives to get into the business. But for 21-year-old, Rachel Reid -- she cites “having the drive and the hunger” as her means of getting into modeling.

The Cleveland Heights native, who recently began her career in the beginning of May 2006, was in Miami during this interview. She’s putting the finishing touches on a calendar that is set for release at the start of the New Year. With her game on point and her goals set, Ms. Rachel Reid chats with HHDX as she talks about her upbringing in Upset City, how she plans on navigating her career, and why her and The Care Bears have so much in common.

HHDX: When I first got your number, I saw that it was a 216 number. What part of Cleveland are you from?

RR: I’m originally from and still stay in Cleveland Heights. I stay off of White Thorn, if you have any idea where that is at. Living there, well… I’ve had my ups and downs with Cleveland. For one, it is very diverse. There are plenty of neighborhoods that have different races, religious backgrounds, and whatnot. So, it was good with that. The downfall is that the town is small. Everyone knows everyone. So, the bad part of Cleveland is that people always know your business. The hate can be big here, too.

HHDX: With Cleveland being known as “Upset City” – how did you manage to escape the hate?

RR: It’s hard, I’m still trying to deal with it. I’m actually in the process of moving outside of Cleveland. I think the time is necessarily ripe for me to leave here. I want to go somewhere else to continue to further my career. I feel like right now is the time for a change. I am looking to move to Houston. I’ll stay there for awhile, then I plan on heading out to L.A.. I am aiming to do more than what I’m doing now. I want to get into acting. I want to keep moving up the totem pole. I only just started, having been doing this since May of this year. I’ve hosted parties in Miami, Los Angeles, and here in Cleveland. But right now, I am in Miami trying to shoot this calendar. It will be coming out January 2007.

HHDX: Obviously, you’re goal-minded and have a task that you’re extremely focused on. But, my question to you is, what do you plan on doing to enrich your community if and when you become successful?

RR: I definitely would like to put a lot of money back into my high school, if I could. I would try to start some more programs with the kids to help keep them focused. I went to Cleveland Heights High School. The one good thing about Cleveland is that it’s very familiar. When I’m out of town it’s hard for me because I’m the new face and people don’t know that much about me. But when I come back home, I know people and it’s comfortable; it’s home. There are a lot of people in Cleveland who do not like me. They don’t think that I’m making the right decisions. I am working towards a goal and having to deal with the haters is a hard part of coming home. People expect the results quickly. They don’t understand that it’s a process. I’m really picky about my entry into the game. I want to make all the right decisions so that I have a long career ahead of me.

HHDX: I was hoping to be able to do this interview in person, seeing as how you’re close, but right now you’re in Miami. What are you doing?

RR: The calendar is just ten other girls and me who are new in modeling. It’s just something to push our faces out there into the limelight. I think that is a very good thing to do. But like I had said before; I’m moving to Houston and that will put me closer to Atlanta and Los Angeles.

HHDX: This section gets a lot of criticism, some warranted, others not – What incited you to pursue this as a career instead of being a lawyer or something like that?

RR: Right now, it’s what I want to do. I like to travel and meet new people. I want to go back to school. I am trying to learn the business side of things. I’m not trying to limit myself in this industry.

HHDX: Women who choose to enter into this industry become negatively labeled. What have been the ups and downs that you’ve experienced so far?

RR: I would say that I fall into the category of people thinking that all I can do is be a video vixen. That’s one of the reasons why I’m trying to get into acting. Through modeling, I am able to see the world and continue to grow as a person. I have been fortunate to come across some people who are helping me to learn the business. Shakira Ross is the first person who I’ve met. We instantly clicked. In fact, we’re moving in together when I go to Houston. Besides her, no one has really had my back – especially not my peers. Shakira and I talk all the time and we discuss the business. The main thing, out of all of this, that we both understand is that you can’t go off of what everyone else says. You have to trust your guts, your instincts. If you don’t feel it in your heart, then it’s probably not worth doing.

HHDX: Kind of an off-the-wall question, but – what made you want to get your initials tatted on your, umm… posterior?

RR: [Laughs] Actually, it stems from my childhood. My favorite show growing up was the Care Bears. You know how they would have their symbol on their body? I did that in the same style. I have five tattoos, all different types. My mom likes the one I have on my… rump [laughs]. It’s how I, kind of, express myself. All of my tattoos are so different. The one that is the most sentimental to me is a tattoo that I have on my shoulder. It’s of an angel and it has a banner that says, “Guide Me.” It also has my grandparents initials on it. Those are my angels.

HHDX: Since you’ve been modeling – what would you say has been one perk that you’ve enjoyed?

RR: One perk that I’ve enjoyed has been being able to get all dolled up. I’m a tomboy, for real, so doing all these photo shoots allows me to get all beautified and whatnot. I really enjoy it.
