California dreams do come true. Sherman Oaks to be exact. Britni Cardosa is a third-year Child Development major at California State University. She’s also a vision of a walking wet dream, as she’s been in a few music videos. “Money in the Bank” with Lil’ Scrappy, “Angel” with Pharrell Williams, “Snakes on the Brain” by Captain Ahab for the “Snakes on a Plane” soundtrack, and was even the ring girl for the Oscar award winning movie, “Million Dollar Baby”.
Ms. Cardosa is a vivacious young lady with an intellect to match. Her goals are to be able to help out young children to have a better and more productive lifestyle. This Crenshaw High School graduate only looks at her position in music videos as an opportunity for a greater goal that God is calling her for.
HipHopDX.com is blessed to have Ms. Cardosa sit down with us as she talks about her community, expresses her thoughts about Republican staples -- Governor Schwarzenegger and President Bush, andmore.
HHDX: You’re from Sherman Oaks, California, right? Since it is in the San Fernando Valley section of Los Angeles, what was it like growing up and how did it contribute to you being in the profession that you’re currently in?
BC: I’m originally from Los Angeles. At the school that I used to go to we used to have an after school program. In California, everything has been reduced. They’re losing funding for the schools around here. On top of that college fees have been raised. So, with my career, it kind of went both ways. I mean you have your obstacles, but the situation that goes on here in Sherman Oaks didn’t contribute to me wanting to be a model/actress. It did contribute to me being a Child Development major. I want to work with children within the community.
HHDX: For those that don’t know, what videos have you appeared in?
BC: The most recent was “Money in the Bank” and I just did “No Matter What They Say”, Lil’ Flip’s “What It Do?”, and “Angel” with Pharrell Williams. Supposedly, they didn’t use the footage that was shot with me for Pharrell’s video. They went back and re-shot it and gave it a totally different look. I didn’t like the fact they did that. Even though I was a stand-in, I did my job and it was a blessing that he asked me to be a part of his video.
HHDX: How did you find out about the video?
BC: I just heard about the video through the grapevine and heard it from other people. He’s supposed to release the single, but I don’t know if he’s going to.
HHDX: I can dig that. There is a stigma that seems to be attached with being a “video girl.” Stereotypes ranging from not being intelligent enough to having to be promiscuous just to get a gig, are just a few. Those aside, what is one thing that no one really knows about Britni Cardosa?
BC: I think that people don’t know that I have invested time into doing this. Doing music videos just happened to fall into my lap. I started out doing extra work on different television shows and music videos. I did one video at the time. That was “No Daddy” by Teiarra Mari. From that point on it started the video thing. I don’t dress sexy. I’m into school and I graduated from Crenshaw High School at seventeen. I did my first beauty pageant when I wasn’t even a year old in 1986.
HHDX: You go to California State University – Northridge, correct? What’s your major and are you going for a degree or to be able to double your dollars within the marketplace?
BC: It’s both. I know you have to have a backup plan, but I feel that God put me on this earth to do something. I have a beautiful relationship with children. I am associated with this place that helps out with the Arts. It gives them a place to stay and be safe. It doesn’t matter about the industry, I didn’t sleep my way into it, I worked my butt off to get into this business.
HHDX: I know a few of our readers, especially my editor, are into politics. California is governed by Mr. Terminator, himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger. How do you feel about the job he’s done running the state?
I think that the whole financing with the schools is messed up. I don’t think he handled the Tookie Williams case right. I think that he just wanted to play God. I’ve noticed different things in my community that they’re trying to clean up. But just because the surface is clear, doesn’t mean what’s bubbling up underneath won’t come up again. I’ve never seen him at any real community event that goes on here in California.
HHDX: Schwarzenegger is Republican and has dreams of being our Commander-in-Chief, but currently, Bush is our “leader.” If they were to invoke the draft, would you go over to Iraq and serve alongside our troops?
Honest to God, I want to enlist in the U.S. Marine corp, regardless of the draft or not. I was in the ROTC for four years. I wouldn’t want to go while Bush is in office. Things are escalating, as you can see, in the press. I would like to be a narcotics officer in the U.S. Marine.
HHDX: So far the nation really doesn’t like anything Republican related. Not too recently, a drug called “Plan B” was introduced and approved by the FDA. The drug is an emergency contraceptive that can prevent accidental pregnancy. Do you think that this drug will encourage teenage pregnancy? Or do you think that its purpose is more positive?
BC: Kind of, I mean technically they already have one on the market. I think that they should make it public to the youth about this product. I mean there is a downfall that there is something out there that’ll allow children to just have sex, but I know that the people need to know.
HHDX: Most people wouldn’t think that a person in your career would have opinions about what goes on in current events. How do you think your career aspirations coincide with your overall code of living?
BC: It is what it is. What I want is what I’m called to do for. I’ve gotten into other opportunities because of what I’ve been able to do. The overall goal is to be able to have these kids benefit from this whether it be from donations, sponsorships, mentoring, whatever.
HHDX: They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but what is it that captures your attention when it comes to men? What is a turn-off that you have about men?
BC: First impression is everything. I love a man that’s taller than them. I love dimples, a nice physique is always plus. But if they’re not smart and cannot handle a real conversation, then there is no need to have my phone number. I don’t like it when guys take over with their confidence. Can’t be a jealous guy; just because I make more money than you, I can’t have you being upset with me.
HHDX: You certainly sound like you’re enjoying your life, as we head into 2007, what are a few of your goals that you’d like to accomplish for the next year?
BC: Next year, I will be graduating from college – early. I want to buy a house. I want to continue to give honor to God. I want to stay healthy and to become more financially stable. If God calls upon me to be famous, then so be it.
