The best sign in the Zodiac is Scorpio. No arguments amongst you bickering nobodies who already have too much to complain about. With that said, HHDX proudly introduces you to Ms. Liza Irizarry. This Puerto Rican and Dominican beauty has graced the pages of Maxim, Smooth, and KING magazines.

Born in Washington Heights in New York City, this passionate artist has kept her love affair with music going ever since she was eleven years old. Citing her parents as major influences in her life, this Bronx Bomber fell deep into the sounds of Mary J. Blige, SWV, The Four Tops, and the sounds of Merengue.

HHDX sits down with Ms. Liza Irizarry as she gives her thoughts about the “bring New York back” hip-hop trend, talks about why her boyfriend can’t stop her shine, and how Ciara’s “Promise is comparable to her sex style.

HHDX: Some of our readers may not be familiar with your face. Can you tell us what you’ve been featured in?

LI: I have done a lot of work, actually. I did a movie with Jody Foster and Terrence Howard called The Brave One (2007). I also am did a movie with Marc Anthony called El Cantante (2006). If you look at issue #27 of Smooth Magazine, you’ll see me in there, too. I did a commercial with LL Cool J. The work doesn’t ever stop.

HHDX: Beautiful women are always prone to receiving compliments. It also propels one to think that women like yourself get the best of everything. So, what would you say is one misconception that people have about you?

LI: I believe that that is true. One misconception that people have about me is that they think I’m stuck up… or that I’m a bitch. You know, like… if people just see me, they think that because of how I look. They have the wrong impression though. If they were to get to know me, they’d know that I’m very humble and easygoing. Most girls in this business, though, act stuck up. I’ve been to photo shoots where the girls act like they’ve already made it. Like they’re a damn Tyra Banks or something [laughs]. I’m not like that, though, I try to get along with everyone. No one has really had beef with me, but I hear stories from other girls about what goes on in this industry. A lot of my good, good friends, I’ve met doing shoots. I had done an ad with Big Tigger, it appeared in Donk Magazine. One of the models, Vanessa… we had we met there almost a year ago and to date, we’re best friends. A lot of girls don’t go to shoots to make friends, but I do.

HHDX: You’re a New Yorker through and through. While pursuing your music career, you joined a singing group called, “Una Sangre” and had a song that featured Kurtis Blow. Seeing how hip-hop has come from humble roots to dominating the world’s stage, what is your take on the whole “bring New York back” trend that exploded this year?

LI: Ah, yes… my singing… As far as “bringing New York back”… I don’t even really care about that. Fine… it originated here, but there are other people who make music, too. We [New York] don’t own this shit. We are the creators of hip-hop, but I’m not down with that whole thinking that’s going on now. I believe that anyone can make great music wherever you’re from. The South is hot and people in New York are mad about that. Why? Let them live. I mean, right now… I’m listening to that Lloyd and Lil’ Wayne song. Weezy is hot right now… he’s making some really good music. Ying Yang Twins, I like them, too. Cherish and Lil’ Jon are great, too. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t be on my New York shit. I love my New York peoples… Jay-Z is the king! Nas… he has a good album that’s hot, too.

HHDX: It’s a gift and a curse when trying to go for your goals. Many people want to place negative labels on you for your aspirations. Hell, The Game even made a song about it. Who has been a person who has tried to detract you from your goals?

LI: [Laughs] A lot of people! It’s crazy because my best friend supports me… but she doesn’t believe in what I’m doing. She is into this whole women liberation thing. On her MySpace page, I’m on her top friend’s list. She has this friend who saw my picture and they told her that they didn’t know that I was into “adult entertainment”. At the time, I didn’t see what I was doing as being “adult entertainment”. To me, “adult entertainment” means doing “porn”, and I don’t do that. But when I started analyzing it, I realized that it is sort of doing that. So, when I started thinking about that I understood the connotation. But in Victoria’s Secret, it’s the same type of pictures. It’s the same ones you see in Smooth and KING. But I think that people like to play video models. I mean, check it… The Game is having trouble casting women to be in his video now because of his song. We all know that he’s contradictory, but, it wasn’t wise for him to come out with that song. Of course, you have your chicken-heads, there are quite a few. But that doesn’t mean that that is every female who’s ever done a video. I did a video because Benny Boom wanted to put me in as a feature. If you’ve seen a lot of Kanyé West’s videos, they have acting involved. It’s not just about looking good. I went out for Consequence’s video and the part called for acting. I could’ve done so many videos, but as soon as they say that I’m going to be in the Jacuzzi, with a thong on, or something like that… I don’t do it. I’ve turned down a lot of videos… but a lot of girls take that. From doing BET: UnCut to anything, because they think that anything can be used as a stepping stone. You can always tell the women apart from the chicken-heads.

HHDX: When we first started talking you were telling me about a magazine and a movie that you had in the works. Can you tell us about that?

LI: Actually… my friend is a director. I don’t really want to put too much out there. He’s doing a movie and I have a role in it. It’s in the works. I’m also working with Sean Cummings. He recently just got his own magazine called Show and I’m supposed to be working with him. I am supposed to go to Los Angeles to do a photo shoot for him. So, that’s what is in the works with me.

HHDX: You’ve been featured in music videos, print, and online. What has been the most difficult to deal with?

LI: I haven’t had any problems, really. I don’t have a problem with anything. I’ve been pretty blessed to stay away from all that. The only thing is… my man doesn’t like what I do. He’s Googled me online and has seen my pictures. That is what bothers him. He just thinks that I should keep my clothes on. I just think that he’s being greedy [laughs]. He doesn’t want his friends to see me. One time, they picked up a copy of Black Men’s Magazine. I’m one of the girls featured in one of the advertisements. They saw me. My boyfriend has only really just talked to me about it, but I’m following my dreams and no one is going to stop me. He can disapprove of it all he wants, but I’ve bought him the gifts with the money I’ve made modeling and he didn’t have any problem with that [laughs]. So, that’s the way I see it. If anything ever happens, and I blow up, let’s say I buy him a car… he’s not going to say no. He sometimes doesn’t want me to do the Black Men’s, but these magazines will work with you. They’ll allow you to do what’s comfortable for you. I’ve had a great experience with Smooth Magazine; the editors there are older women and they’re really cool.

HHDX: What has been the most rewarding to your career?

LI: I would have to say that the most rewarding thing has been the recognition from other models. I’ve had models write to me and give some really nice compliments. I love writing to people. A lot of others won’t do that, but when people give me compliments, I try to help them. I like to do that for other people. I help give out advice, because a lot of people don’t know what to do. There is a line between what I do and what others do. If I had to compare myself, I would have to say that I’m like Playboy Magazine, whereas there are a lot of girls who act like they are in Black Tail.

HHDX: With multitudes of women stepping in front of the camera trying to make themselves into a star – what is your rule of warning to anyone before they get into this game seriously?

LI: Don’t fall for the hype. A lot of guys know that you’re thirsty and they’ll use that to their advantage. You don’t really have to talk to the celebrities. I mean… I’m cool with everybody. I’ve had conversations with LL Cool J, just to name someone, but a lot of guys use their star power to their advantage. They’re people just like us, though, they’re not superior… they just have more money. Women get blinded by that and they fall victim when these celebrities try to sleep with them. That’s what gives us a bad name. They think that just because someone gave a celeb a blowjob that they’ll become a star. They’re not! What’s worst is that after it’s all said and done, they’re [the celebrity] going to tell others. Look at someone like Superhead. They were passing her around like a blow-up doll! They even gave her a nickname! Now, she’s trying to profit off of it.

HHDX: Has anyone tried to use their status to put you in an awkward situation?

LI: …Besides trying to get at me… I’ve heard stories where directors have put girls in certain situations. But I think they know who they can do that to and who not to. No one has ever done anything disrespectful to me. Once they have a conversation with certain people, they know who they can do that to and who won’t go for that shit! They would have to arrest me if someone did that to me because they would be jacked up if they tried anything.

HHDX: You talked about your boyfriend’s issues with your modeling. How do you keep the relationship afloat, when one has a problem with what you do?

LI: We have our own little system. I don’t show him the photo shoots. We have a regular relationship. I don’t show him the pictures. It helps that we don’t talk about it at all. If we didn’t have that and I kept putting it all up in his face, I think that we’d be arguing about it more and more. The only thing he says is that he doesn’t want to see me doing something where I’m nude or anything distasteful. You know… I’d come home from doing a shoot and he won’t even ask me about it and I’m just fine with that.

HHDX: Music has always been a part of your life and with you Puerto Rican and Dominican descent, that calienté spice is always there, too. So, if you had to compare a song to your sex style – what would it be and why?

LI: Ooooh… umm, I would say that Ciara’s “Promise is a song that I would compare myself to. I think that it’s a great love making song. It’s a welcomed change. You know back in the day it was more Guy and Jodeci, but her song… it just does something to you. I don’t really have a specific reason behind why I like the song, but I think that the melody just sets the mood off. Ciara’s voice makes the song great to make love to. You would think that with my background that I would say something that is Spanish. But what’s crazy is I’m not really into Spanish music like that. My dad was born in the U.S. He always had R&B playing in the house. My mom played a lot of Spanish music, though, but that was during the holidays, so I grew up listening to American music. You could come to my house and not find a Spanish CD in my house. I would have to go on to the Internet, if I was trying to get some music.

HHDX: So, if you were to “set the mood” to Ciara’s “Promise” – what would you do?

LI: I would probably put it on… let that beat start up… then I’d start stripping for him. And then… you know how it would end [laughs].
