HHDX: You’re an aspiring model, right?
CB: Yes, I am.
HHDX: What made you want to get into such a competitive business?
CB: When I was young, I used to get talked about. I wasn’t all the way developed, you know? When I got older, people told me that I had a nice body. From there on, I wanted to prove that I could do it. It’s something that I love doing. I love taking pictures. It’s a fascinating thing. I’ve worked with just local photographers for now, but I plan on going to Atlanta to try and get work there.
HHDX: Playing Devil’s Advocate – Black women are already disrespected in music videos, rap songs and just daily life… So, why would you want to be in pictures showing off your skin?
CB: To me, I feel like… There’s a way to show off your skin without over doing it. I respect my body, I love it and I’m comfortable in my skin. So, I don’t mind showing it. I control my own fate, basically, so I can only let things go as far as I’d let them go. So, I don’t let myself get that far ahead. Some things are just not that serious. I would not let anyone disrespect me. What I say goes… I am open to other options, but you don’t have to say yes to everything.
HHDX: What is the hardest thing about trying to find work in Michigan?
CB: The hardest thing to me is… it’s not necessarily hard, but it’s how you network. There are so many ladies who are trying to do what I’m trying to do. It’s bad for the people who really want to do this because you have a lot of competition. With guy photographers… they use their position as a way to try and get on [sexually]. Sometimes they don’t do what they’re supposed to be doing. They’re unprofessional. It’s hard to find someone who’s on the same level with you on a business level. I want to meet as many people as I can to learn the industry. You need to know more than just taking pictures. It would do me justice to find out about the photographers and what they do. To learn about the technology involved. Those are key things to know.
HHDX: I don’t think you’d have that problem if you were to come to the much better and more beautiful landscape of Ohio!
CB: Whatever, you’re crazy… [laughs] I am serious. I just keep meeting the wrong individuals.
HHDX: What about you stands out to where someone should put you in their magazine or video?
CB: I feel like the things that most people would notice about me are things that stand out. They would look at my body, but I have an awesome drive, that’s crazy. When I want something, I do whatever it takes to get it done. I can get crazy at times, though, but as long as we’re on the same page, we’re cool. I have my Gemini tendencies, but it takes a lot for me to do something insane. I know how to get my point across without going too far.
HHDX: So, being a Gemini… ever carve up a boyfriend or anything like that?
CB: No… the craziest thing that I have done… Hmm, I would say… my boyfriend and I were at school one day and… I don’t know… it got a little heated and… woo! We just, basically, you know… got down. I don’t want to say it like that; I want to say that we got “close” in the school library. Take it as you wish [laughs].
HHDX: If presented an opportunity to be in a video – who’s would you be in and why?
CB: Let me see… There’s a couple that I would like to be in. Truthfully, any video that’s hip-hop, rap or R&B, I’m game. I don’t discriminate because I’m a dancer. I’m really talented. I am trained, been a student of the game for seven or eight years. I love to dance. Anything that got a beat, I can dance to. But when it comes to videos, I would have to say… R. Kelly. He is very versatile with his music. He can make all the songs that fit the right moment.
HHDX: Well, you might not make it… you’re not in high school [laughs]! You’re currently at Wayne State University. What do you go to school for and what do you want to do with your degree?
CB: At Wayne State, I major in Business… after three long years, I’ve decided on that. With that major, the future is open to my discretion. I have a huge variety to choose from. I do hair and I was thinking about opening up a salon. But if my modeling jumps off, first, then I would do that. Business gives you a lot of background information on what you want to do. There’s a different concentration when it comes down to it. It keeps me focused.
HHDX: So, I guess modeling isn’t the only thing that you’re good at? What else are you good at that people would not know about you?
CB: Like I said, I’m an excellent dancer. I’m a hair stylist. I’m multi-talented. I can harmonize, but I love to dance.
HHDX: I have a weakness for dancers. If your modeling career didn’t take off – would you still try to be in the entertainment business?
CB: Oh, yeah! I would try and be a choreographer or be a back-up dancer in a video. I love it! I would do that.
HHDX: Being that this is a hip-hop site – who are your top five MC’s and why?
CB: Lil’ Wayne – he’s the coldest rapper out there. He’s the type of rapper that you can still listen to his music, even if there wasn’t any beats behind his voice. Young Jeezy – Even though he talks about the same thing, his beats be hard. His voice is right for the songs. He has the right tone for the music. He’s versatile. He knows how to switch it up. Young Buck – He’s tight. He’s coming out kind of strong. He has his own swagger. Lil’ Kim – She’s the coldest female lyricist. She’s always talking about something. She always got something real to talk about. Blade Icewood – He was just… he was a hustler. He had that ambition. He was one of the realest people in the game. I could always dig what he was saying. He still made a lot of things happen that allowed him to be able to be in the top.
HHDX: Also, being that this is Beauty & Brains – are you a single Black lady or did someone get you scooped up already?
CB: I’m not tied down, but things are subject to change. I got somebody but it’s not official. So, I’ll just say that I’m dating.
HHDX: How does he feel about you being the object of attention for men all over?
CB: I don’t have complete support, but it’s still to a point where it’ll be some type of hating. You know what I’m saying? It’s not always good. It’s hard to maintain a significant other with trying to be in this type of industry. The photographers… there’s always somebody trying to get on with their own personal pleasure. That’s hard for someone, especially if they are the jealous type. I try to let him know what’s going. So, you have to be with someone stable for that to go on, because if not, you’re going to have problems. If a person is not behind me 100%, then I don’t need him.
HHDX: Well, as an aspiring model – what’s your next step in trying to reach that higher level in the business?
CB: I’m making plans as of right now to travel. I want to go to different cities and states to network and see where it goes. I’m in the process of building a website. I have had a calendar out and I’m trying to expand on that. I’m trying to be seen and become a common name in the industry. I’m working hard, so keep your eye out for more from me.
HHDX: Anything else you want to say?
CB: I just got something extra special for the haters. Get everything ready because it’s coming. I haven’t forgotten about y’all.
