Queen Latifah Feels Female Emcees Haven't Topped The Lil Kim, Foxy Brown Era

Queen Latifah says Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith's involvement helped her in deciding to pursue "The Queen Latifah Show."

While promoting her new daytime talk show, “The Queen Latifah Show,” noted lyricist Queen Latifah took some time to speak on women in Hip Hop during an appearance on the Rickey Smiley Morning Show.

Queen Latifah, who last released a studio album in 2009, was asked to share the names of the female emcees she’s been most impressed by over the past 15 years. In response, the rapper/actress expressed her belief that artists like Lil Kim, Missy Elliott, and Foxy Brown have yet to be topped.

Additionally, Queen Latifah spoke on the need for there to be room for numerous female lyricists as opposed to there being only one rapper or a handful of rappers who remain the focus of each era.

“I still think some of the best ones that have done it have yet to be topped. I still don’t think anybody has topped the whole era of Foxy, Kim, Missy, Eve, me on the tail end kinda things,” the soon-to-be television host explained. “I’m still looking forward to it not just being a one-at-a-time female rapper thing. I mean, I think Nicki Minaj is great, but I think we definitely need to blow up some of the other females that are out there.”

Set to air on September 16, “The Queen Latifah Show” is executive produced by Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith, two people Queen Latifah says the show wouldn’t have been possible without.

“It took Will and Jada to be involved in this for me to really do it, to be honest with you,” said Queen Latifah. “Because I have done a talk show before and I learned a lot doing that show, but I knew then—what I learned then was that I really had to make it me. It had to be something that was really, really me in order for me to love going in there and working that hard and making it happen. And doing it every day. But I’ve known Will and Jada since I was a teenager. We’ve grown up together…Will has helped me out with various things throughout the years.”

Described by Queen Latifah as a talk show with “real conversations” focused “on real people every day, doing amazing things,” “The Queen Latifah Show” will air next week on CBS.

my roomate's sister-in-law makes $60 every hour on the laptop. She has been laid off for 6 months but last month her pay was $15613 just working on the laptop for a few hours. why not find out more... www.Cafe44.com Its, rather, about the content of his lyrics. But of course this could be an invitation for arguments. So let's just say its a personal opinion.

If you want to listen to some talented female MC's/rappers/artists go listen to Angel Haze, Lola Monroe, Snow Tha Product, Emily Yasko & Rapsody. They are pretty much the only female rappers worth listening to in 2013.

WTF is she talking about foxy and kim never wrote their shit. lauryn wrote her own shit. also treach wrote queen latifah's shit.

Who cares what who wrote...That is not what she or this blog was about...It was about the movement of real hip hop!!!

it's funny wyclef jean recently admitted that he was writing lauryn's lines when they started out

There's no respect for female rappers because over half of them just use rap as a stepping stone for other sellout moves like going pop, or becoming a movie star so it's hard to take them serious. So even though Latifah is in the female top 5 she actually messed things up along with Salt and Pepa, Eve, Foxy, and Lil Kim for any upcoming female that actually cares about the artform itself and are not in it as a step to where they really trying to go.

Queen Latifah must not know about Rapsody. Rapsody all day. That mixtape, She Got Game, is serious.

Foxy Brown bragged about having an "ill na na" and Lil Kim can "make a Sprite can disappear in her mouth". I could name 10 female rappers off the top of my head who are better than these two whores.

FOH...As ignant as their subject matter was it was needed. How many guy rappers spit nothing but womanizing lyrics all through the golden era? Stop it...Women needed to hear some women being rude too and that's why they sold like Hot cakes.

And this is why femcees don't get the respect they so "rightly" deserve. Being as raunchy and nasty as a male rapper makes them look like sluts. Point blank period. Have you ever thought about how society looks the other way when a man can brag about his sexual exploits, but looks down upon a woman when she does it? It's a man's world.

IS THAT ALL YOU HEARD ! U MUST BE DEF !
    • Anonymous
@DROSKI I've listened to both of them, and I'm sorry, but neither Kim or Foxy have any replay value whatsoever. You take away the make up, the thongs, the bras, the hearing aids, and the plastic surgery and what do you have? two average-to-subpar female rappers. Face it, they were nothing more than glorified sex objects/billboards.

Do people not realize Kim and foxy used ghostwriters? Foxy had Nas and Jay writing her shit and Kim had Biggie and many others after he died. That automatically disqualifies them.
    • Anonymous
They realise, they just don't care. I'd rather hear a female who can actually rap and sound good who has her shit written for her, than hear a girl with no talent do some bullshit because the ghostwriter or their writing is crap. I don't care who the fuck writes it, I care if it's good and whether or not the artist does a good job with what is written for them. I don't think anyone writes their shit by entirely themselves without anyone helping in any way.

Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Sugarhill Gang,Roxanne Shante, Biz Markie, and Eazy-E are out. They had some songs written for them. I understand what you trying to say but just because someone else had a song written for them, shouldn't take away from that artist. Some of the greatest songs in hip hop were raps written by other individuals. Where would hip hop be without them?

to be honest, I don't know how much of it was ghost written or not. I think its over exaggerated w/ femcees, ppl always assume they ghostwrite. I think biggie, nas and jay probably were involved in their development and taught them how to write, but I think sayin they're all written is overblowing it.

Roxanne shante had G rap writing hers and how dare she forget about Remy Ma

I still haven't heard any GREAT female MCs lately since Lauryn. I heard Nitty Scott was really good, but that's one of the main thing the game needs in my opinion.
  • REAL TALK
Rapsody, Jean Grae, MC Melodee . . . 3 of the newer femcees that will lyrically tear Nicki Minaj apart and end her career

no mention of lauren?? tut tut
    • woah
no. because lauren is not a rapper. but i am surprised latifah didn't mention lauryn hill.
    • Anonymous
i was thinkin that, but it was that era, so its kinda implicit.
