Bobbito To Premier Documentary Film On Playground Basketball

One of Hip Hop's most respected deejays, label starters and taste-makers brings a film on pick-up basketball to theaters later this month.

To Hip Hop fans, Bobbito Garcia (along with former partner Stretch Armstrong) are legendary deejays and taste-makers. Their 1990s "Stretch & Bobbito" radio show helped develop the careers of artists including Nas, Big L, Mobb Deep and O.C., among many others. Bob, who wrote for The Source magazine, would later be an A&R at Def Jam Records, before launching his own Fondle 'Em Records imprint. The vinyl-focused underground Hip Hop label would be responsible for heralded releases from MF DOOM, The Cenobites and The Juggaknots, among many others.

To basketball fans, Bobbito is equally respected. The longtime publisher of Bounce magazine and playground basketball historian is taking his expertise to film. On May 22, Kool Bob Love will premier Doin' It In The Park, PIck-Up Basketball. He directed the film with Kevin Couliau.

“Whether you’re Lebron James or President Obama, you’ve played pickup basketball," said Bob in a press statement. "You might have 30 different nationalities represented on one court. So it’s a very unique environment, in fact, the most unique sports environment in the world in my estimation.”

The film features commentary by Julius "Dr. J" Erving, Kenny "The Jet" Smith, and also from playground pioneers such as Richard "Pee Wee" Kirkland, James "Fly" Williams, Jack "Black Jack" Ryan.
