C-O-Nspiracy, Welcome to the NBA Finals!

Today is the first game of this years NBA finals and like any sports enthusiast, I’m excited. You got Michael Jor..oops I mean Kobe Bryant, gunning for his first ring without Shaq. You have KG, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen going for their first ring period. You have two of the NBA’s most storied franchises meeting for the 11th time in Finals history. This should be historic, this should be professional basketball at its highest level, this should be the dream match up NBA fans have been talking about since the Pau Gasol trade, this should be all those things plus more, right? It should but why does it feel like David Stern just pulled another fast one on us?  This feels like the 85 draft, Cleveland somehow winning the draft the year Lebron was available, not one person knowing about a cheating referee, Lebron single handily beating the Pistons in the playoffs, the Lakers giving up virtually nothing for Memphis’ best player, this feels like another NBA conspiracy to me folks. I don’t claim to know everything but this just plays out a little too good to be true. Lets take a moment to recap how this series really came about. Take a trip with me down memory lane.

It all dates back to last year when nobody in the world, except Detroit and San Antonio fans, wanted to see them two teams match up in the finals. That would have been one of the least exciting matchups in basketball history. David Stern knew the TV ratings would plummet so what did he do? Made sure some new blood, the new face of the league, King James made it to the finals to keep things interesting. It didn’t workout exactly how Stern planned it though. The Cavs were swept out of finals and the NBA experienced one of its lowest ratings for the finals in 37 years. That had to bruise the commissioner’s ego. The league he built up to become a multi-billion dollar business was taking a step back during it’s biggest games.

Now we in the off-season and everyone are waiting to see where Kevin Garnett will land after finally asking out of Minnesota. Surprise surprise! He ends up going to the team with the worst record (that’s why they probably didn’t win the draft lottery) along with Ray Allen in a move that pretty much assured them of an Eastern Conference Finals trip. Everyone knows the Eastern Conference is the weaker of the two conferences so placing that many stars on the same team was almost guaranteeing them a good season as long as they got some chemistry going into the season.

Now the season is here and the Celtics are sweeping through the league taking teams out one after another just like most people expected. The one thing we didn’t expect was for the Lakers to be doing as good as they were after Kobe’s off-season tirade to anybody that would listen about wanted to be traded. Andrew Bynum, the subject of most of Kobe’s frustrations, came back like a beast. Then Bynum got hurt and the Lakers just wasn’t as good with Kwame Brown in the middle. Hell, who has been good with Kwame Brown in the middle? So the Lakers go out and pull one of the most bizarre trades I have ever witnessed. Pau Gasol for Kwame Brown, a rookie point guard, and a couple draft picks. You give up your franchise player for nothing, to a team in your conference, during the middle of the season, way to go Memphis. The match up had been set. All the Lakers and Celtics had to do was not mess it up once the playoffs arrived. 

The playoffs are here and the Lakers are working like a well-oiled machine. Kobe is taking the lead; Pau is very comfortable not being the go to guy, and Lamar Odom has found his place as one of the best third options in the league. Boston on the other is struggling outside of Boston. It took them until the Eastern Conference Finals to finally win a game on the opposing team’s court and they did it against the mighty Detroit Pistons of all teams. They couldn’t beat the Hawks in Atlanta or the Cavs in Cleveland, but they take out Detroit in the Palace with no problem. Yeah folks, I was scratching my head as well. It didn’t matter at the end, thanks to Rasheed Wallace’s meltdown, and the Spurs just being too old, we now have the Lakers and Celtics in the finals, again. ESPN got to run all the classic battles, legends of the game became important to the fans of today if only for a couple of minutes, and David Stern can expect the TV ratings to be considerably higher this year. This will probably be the highest rated final since the greatest retired for the second time. You know, after the Byron Russell push and jumper. Hope you enjoy folks; this is what David Stern felt the sports world wanted.
