so before ipods there were these round objects called cd's (anyone seen those around anywhere?). before those, there were these manufactured, ancient, rectangle looking things called "tapes"
there was also this song called Rock The Bells by LL Cool J and this certain album by Nas (It Was Written) that completely changed my views on music (this was when all we heard on the radio was the Soul For Real - Candy Rain's Montell Jordans - This Is How We Do it, & SWV). If I Ruled The World with Lauryn Hill was def a change of pace from the Keith Sweat - Nobody days and New Edition Home Again album.
YES i used to scream 'fuck Mobb Deep' cuz 2pac said so. See, out here in the west coast during this time...Death Row was officially poppin. Even after hearing Nas and LL, i had to rep the coast. That beef shit was real. Then i heard this red tape a friend from high school made me.
i ferociously looked for it today, but no luck. the only OFFICIAL track i remember was on there was Ghostface - Mighty Healthy. But this was the tape that had me in a NY state of mind living out West. This is where i first heard of Rawkus, Gangstarr, Big L, Cormega, Wu Tang Killa Bees and Group Home - Supastar. This was EPIC considering Snoop Dogg - Doggfather, Westside Connection, Bone Thugs and Nate Dogg were on constant rotation at that period in my infant hip-hop life.
who remembers bumping All Eyes on Me, but you were always missing disc 1? Then you would hit your boy up to dub their disc 1 on a tape, but everyone and their mama had the same problem? Or what about Biggie's Life After Death where you would bump the shit out of Disc 1, but CD2 was nowhere to be found?? Yall remember that ugly orange, shiny ass Master P Ghetto D CD case? Remember when soundtracks were hotter than peoples albums? You couldnt WAIT for the movie to come out, just so you could cop the soundtrack (Above The Rim, Rhyme & Reason, Belly, Tales From The Hood, Whos The Man? etc).
or your boy you would let borrow your cd's and you never saw them shits again? dude made you cop your own shit 3-4 times?
or hi-jacking your parents wack ass tapes to stay up and dub all the late night hip-hop shows?
STRETCH ARMSTRONG IS NOWWWW IN YOURRR RADIOOOOO...
everyone has a story tho. what got you into hip-hop? and PLEASE noone say "i heard Lil Wayne - Lollipop on the radio" LOL
