Kill That Noise

So, I know the whole “blogger beef” thing is hot right now. I’m not gonna front like I’m not paying attention to it, I’m checking the blogs and the comments, but I figured I’d throw you guys something else to check out, somewhat of an alternative. I try not to talk too much about myself; I try to just state opinions and keep it moving. I never did an introduction blog (I might do one soon, even though I know it’s a little late), so let me just go ahead and say this: I live, breath, eat, sleep, and shit hip hop. I love the whole culture, more than just the music. The beat boxing, the b-boying, the graff, the djing, all that shit. At one time I was heavily involved in one of the elements of it, but I decided I didn’t want to go that route, so I decided to cheer from the sideline like the college football player that never went pro at his alma mater Saturday nights. We have our own style of dress, slang, all of that, the problem is, (according to me) some of our slang has gotten quite played out. I don’t mean played out like “people aren’t a part of our culture saying Fa shizzle” played out, I mean like there’s problems with the slang and we should stop it. Don’t believe me, let’s take a look at it shall we……

“We got that crack, we got that crack, we got that, that, that, that, got that crack,”
Sampled hook from 40 Cal’s “We got that Crack”

I know this is somewhat hypocritical because I say dope, but I’m not really feeling showing your appreciation of something by calling it “Crack” or “Piff”. First of all, I know everyone is not from the hood. I’ve been blessed/cursed (there are certain things I miss about living on the eastside of Long Beach, that’s why I’m still always there) with the opportunity to have moved away from it. I was raised there, and I’ve seen what crack does to people. I’ve seen what crack does to neighborhoods. I’ve seen “The Night of the Living Dead” in real life. I’ve seen people lose their kids because of their drug habits, yet refuse to leave the drugs alone. It’s sad shit. I’ve seen kids not get taken away, and get neglected by their parents because mommy things it’s more important to get her rock. Therefore, I don’t wanna talk to some damn suburbanite about the new Kweli CD, and he tell me it’s “Crack”…no family, no. We have to leave crack alone, whether it be the drug, or just the word. “Piff” on the other hand, I originally didn’t have a problem with. The thing is, I started to notice that people who don’t smoke weed say it. I know it may seem like a minor deal, but the thing is, you talk to someone, and you say “Oh, you blow trees?” and they say “Nah, why would I do that? I think people who smoke weed are stupid? I have no need for that” But when you ask them about the Common tracks that have came out so far, they say “Common, oh, his CD is gonna be Piff,”……anyone else see the problem with that……? I don’t know, that’s just my opinion.

“Ya’ll know who’s….keepin it gangsta”
-Fabolous “Keepin it gangsta”

First of all, there’s something about singing “keepin it gangsta” that just doesn’t seem gangsta to me…I don’t know what it is. This shit is hella dead. For starters, most people’s idea of gangsta (or gangster, like Crooked I said, gangsta does seem sort of commercial) is all fucked up. Not giving a fuck and being willing to shoot someone cuz they stepped on your AF1’s isn’t gangsta, that’s stupid. First of all, shoes can be cleaned. Second of all, taking someone’s life for something as trivial as a scuff mark on your shoe is stupid. Third, in case you don’t know, if that person dies, you could get life in prison, or the death penalty, just because you wanna be viewed as “gully”. Forth, even if you do get away, and don’t care about someone else’s life, now you’ve made a perfectly fine gun hot.  If your ignorant enough to not give a shit about someone else’s life, I’m pretty sure you care enough about your own enough to not want to go on “vacation” (isn’t that sad, in the hood, people get locked up so much, that if someone says “where’d so and so go” and the reply is, “oh…they’re on vacation” we already know they’re locked up) for too long, so you either wasted money and must dispose of your firearm, or take the chance getting locked up just for carrying it. (Or get the barrel changed out, but most people don’t know about that). Being a gangster is something you don’t advertise. All these rappers declaring they’re gangsta this, I’ll shoot a nigga that, did Frank Sinatra sing about his mob ties? Fuck no. If you’re really involved in shit like that, bringing it to light could get you time. Actually, now that I’m writing this, anything phrase involving gangsta should be killed. People liking something and saying, “Oh, that’s gangsta”….dead. Stop it. If you don’t live it, stop fronting, don’t speak it. If you do live it, you’re stupid for speaking it.

“Keep it pimpin, pimpin”
-TI, “Trap Musik”

This is another one in the “keeping it gangster” category.  I’ve seen probably 5 pimps in my life (in real life), and known 2, yet every time I turn around, someone’s talking about “they keeping it pimpin”, “I’m a pimp,”…..STFU. From what I know (by knowing pimps) a pimp is someone who has females (or in some odd cases males) exchanges sexual favors for money, and then bring the money to them. In return, the pimp takes care of the females needs. Her clothes, her food, all of that.  Now that we got that out the way…if you sleep with two chicks, and they give you money when you ask for it, you’re not a pimp. In all actuality, that makes you a hoe. Exchanging sexual favors for money? That’s a hoe. If you sleep with a lot of different women, and they all fall in love with you because they think they’re your one and only, you’re not a pimp, you’re a liar. I love Xzibit’s music, but I don’t understand how you can “Pimp” someone’s ride. The word pimp get’s thrown around way too much and attached to too many things and people it shouldn’t be attached to.

“Give it to you real, no promo, and real men shouldn’t have to say no homo”
-Jadakiss “some freestyle”

I really should have listed this first. This is by far the most played term in hip hop. I’ve said it at times (just to make fun of cam’ron), but keeping it real, it doesn’t change what you just said. A lot of people in the hip hop culture are homophobes. Me personally, I don’t give a shit. What another dude decides to do behind closed doors is none of my business. I don’t advertise my heterosexuality, don’t advertise your homosexuality. I’m not running around smacking women’s asses and squeezing breasts on YouTube, I don’t want to see some dudes squeezing each other’s balls on TV, plain and simple. However, it seems a lot of other people in Hip Hop are overly worried about homosexuals. So much so, they don’t want to say anything that sounds anywhere near homosexual. To avoid criticism, after saying somewhat of a homosexual comment, they through in “no homo”. That changes nothing. When T-Pain said Ray J had a “big meat” that sounded like something a homosexual would say. If he was worried about that, he shouldn’t have said it. Throwing in a no homo afterward (I don’t remember if he did) doesn’t change anything, he still sounded like one of the dudes from “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy”. If someone says “I like Mayonnaise more than Miracle Whip,” do they have to say “No Whitey”? No, so why “No homo”? Are people that scared of the masculinity being questioned? It was funny at first, but now it just seems played out.

“Ghetto, Fabulous, broadcasting live from Los Angeles,”
Mack 10 “Ghetto, Fabulous”

I know I said there were certain things I missed about living on the eastside of Long Beach, but there’s nothing fabulous about it. Sorry, I know you love your hood, but gun fights, needles everywhere, and crack heads ain’t fabulous. I know people might look at me as the uppity Negro for this one, but oh well, I don’t give a shit. Aspiring to have a safer neighborhood isn’t selling out; it’s trying to live longer. In the “ghetto” (which is a term in itself that should be retired), it’s a lot more likely you’ll get hit with a stray bullet than in the other neighborhoods. You have a lot higher probability of “running yo shit” in the “ghetto”. That’s not fabulous, that’s dangerous. We need to upgrade our neighborhoods. I’m not living there anymore, but that’s still my neighborhood. No matter where I stay, I’m always a part of the eastside of Long Beach. Before we can improve our neighborhoods, first we gotta stop glamorizing it. I know people’s intentions with phrases like “ghetto fabulous” is to take some of the negative connotation away from the neighborhoods a lot of were forced to grow up in, but doing that isn’t helping take the negative reality out of it. You wanna make the hood fabulous; pick your god damn trash up. You wanna make the hood fabulous, tell ya homie stop robbing innocent people. You wanna make the hood fabulous, start spending more money at your local mom and pops stores owned by people who live in your community and stop giving you paycheck to big businesses like Wal-Mart, Target, Macy’s, Demo, etc., etc. If everyone took the time to do shit like that, then the ghetto would be fabulous. Until then, stop using that damn term.

I was gonna say “Bling” should be retired, but that’s just because too many people use it. Really, we should consider the shit we’re saying. I mean, I know the people who frequently read my blogs are highly intelligent, that’s why they read my shit. Ya’ll other c at’s just checking my shit….watch ya mouth.
