The Reality From out West

All grow'd up

Every now and then, while doing something I used to love, I find myself questioning my own actions. You ever get that? Sometimes you do something, and then you say “What the fuck am I doing?” or “I don’t understand why I used to like this shit!” Most likely the actions didn’t change, you did. I find this happening to me more often, I assume it’s me growing up. I used to love “How High”…I thought that shit was hilarious. Then, when I watched it like a year ago I was like “This shit is corny than a muthafucka”. I used to think “In 2 Deep” was the shit. Come on, the dude’s name is God…that gotta be dope right? Fuck no. Realizing “In 2 Deep” and “How High” were pieces of shit is something that seems like it should have been obvious to me in the first place, so please believe I wasn’t giving myself a huge pat on the back for growing up after coming to those conclusions. More recently however, I find myself questioning some of the music/artist I once found dope.

I’ve always had the belief that there are two things you shouldn’t talk about in public…religion and politics. People will kill family members over those two issues right there, so putting your thoughts on those subjects out in the air for random strangers to hear…not safe. I recently broke my rule at work. I was already upset with one of the supervisors for basically assuming I’m supporting Obama because he’s (half) black and I’m a darker shade of brown. Once she began “educating” in uninformed person on the great qualities of Sarah Palin, however, I lost it. I completely put her on blast. It was an atomic bomb type of blast. This chick was so on blast, after some odd silence and everyone turned their attention away, she approached me and asked me what’s a good news radio station. While it was a great feeling then, since then I’ve been getting odd treatment. Oh well, you live and you learn. Plus, the dumb broad isn’t really over me, so the attitude is something that doesn’t mess with my pockets. I know your thinking, what does this have to do with your opinion on rappers? Well, while I easily could’ve avoided this situation, some rappers can’t.  Some rappers are sought out to bring their opinions of politics to the table…however, a lot of times, they should do what I should have done…and STFU.

So, I was at Rock the bells this year, and the “revolution” was in full swing. I sat through Immortal Technique’s rant of “If your Mom or dad is a cop…FUCK YOUR MOM nigga” and Dead Prez’s “Demoncrats” catch phrases. I laughed. It was entertaining…then I thought, hold the fuck up. WHAT?

Every time I’ve been to an Immortal Technique show he does his ranting thing, which I normally find cool. It’s your stage, you got your soap box, speak. Then when I started really thinking about the shit…it was dumb than a muthafucka. See, Tech goes into this thing where he says “I know some of your moms or dads are cops, and your probably like ‘my dad works hard as a cop’…BUT FUCK YOUR DAD NIGGA”. See, before I did a blog about how if muthafuckas really wanted a revolution, and really wanted to stop police brutality, you’d have to do some serious shit….like start picking off cops with sniper rifles. The more I thought about it though, the TRUE solution to police brutality is (or at least should be) a lot easier than that. All it would take is for muthafuckas who can’t stand police brutality to start being cops. Fuck marching. Go get a badge, protect your community. Look out for your peoples. The problem is though, with muthafuckas running around saying “Fuck All Cops” why would you want to be a cop? Why would you want to put your life in danger because muthafuckas are saying ALL cops are a danger, or ALL cops are racists? While you’d get the job to help your people, their hate for you could eventually sway you in another direction. It’s not just rappers that say this shit either, so the message is already out there, some of the “revolutionary” rappers just help to reinforce it. Don’t trip Tech fans…Dead Prez is no better.

I use to bang “Let’s Get Free” constantly, however, more recently I find myself knocking “RBG” more. Even back when I first got onto Dead Prez though, I have to admit, I never agreed with their song “They Schools”. I’m not the biggest fan of the education we get at high school or even the college level…BUT GET REAL NIGGA. Just because you didn’t go to school for it doesn’t mean you can’t be a doctor or a lawyer…are you serious? While medical school won’t make you a PERFECT doctor, one thing it will do is show your dedication to the profession. Not just anybody is gonna go through all the schooling it takes to be a doctor. I’m sure yearly plenty of students who chased the dream of being an MD due to the (supposed) large amounts of money they figured they  were gonna be guaranteed, crack under the pressure of years, and years, and years of post-high school education. Good. If you’re not dedicated enough to make it through that schooling, you’re not dedicated enough to tell me how (un)healthy I am. Even with all the years of med school required to be an doctors, some quacks still get the 100 lifetime achievement points (or gold trophy…depending on which system you have) of MD. Imagine if all that schooling wasn’t required.

Maybe I’m wrong and their right. Maybe I’m upset just they took shots at Obama & the “Demoncrats”.  “Don’t be fooled by Obama and the Demoncrats,”…really nigga. I’m all for people actually using their minds and questioning Obama, but sometimes you can just sense the “Fuck everybody, fuck everything, support nothing, it’s all wrong” in someone. Another thing…I’m from California. I know what happens when you DON’T vote, or DON’T give a shit. I seen the Terminator take office. I listened as republicans told me “Oh, he’s raising the prices of College because he has to. The Democrats fucked the Californian budget up” “Oh he’s just raising the price of vehicle registration because the democrats fucked up the Californian budget up”. Now, after he’s been in office for awhile, I see that state employees are getting fired left and right, the remaining state employees are facing the possibility of getting paid federal minimum wage (which is lower the Californian minimum wage) and I see this muthafucka refusing to sign off on a budget because he doesn’t like it, (even though democrats and republicans came to an agreement on it) and threatening to veto any bill that comes in front of him until he gets a budget he likes. I thought the raising the price of school and vehicle registration was gonna fix shit? I see the difference one muthafucka can make, and in all reality, if you don’t vote, you increase the chances of McCain/Palin office, which in about 1 year will be a Palin office. I’d much rather vote for Gore, but unless I can find a way to rally up half of America to write in votes for Gore, my vote is with Obama.

I still bang Dead Prez, and I still agree with a lot of shit I heard from IT, but I’m no puppet.  I’m pretty sure all 10 of the Dead Prez/IT fanboys will come try to flame me for going at their idols…that’s cool. What I hope they realize is, no matter what their rapping gods tell them, you’ll never change the system from the outside. Walking around with your hoodie on during a sunny day ice grilling cops when they’re not looking isn’t gonna change anything. If you really wanna change the system, you have to do it from the inside.

Word to TI

“It’ll hurt ya hear to see ya favorite rapper lame as hell”
TI “I Can’t Quit”

I have to admit, I’ve seen some rappers I listened to punk out and get their ass beat. It sort of ruined everything for me. Not that I believe half the shit rappers say on record.  Like my younger nephew once said “If all these rapper’s in Atlanta were big time drug dealers…who was buying the drugs? How many Dope spots does Atlanta have?”  The thing is though, sometimes, the reality makes the stretch that rappers spit on record even worse. How you walk away as your boy get’s his ass whooped in your own hood? Where’s your “set” at? Where was all those dudes reppin the 5 or whatever the fuck when your boy’s hair was flying through the air as he got knocked the fuck out? Nuff said about those sweet boys.

Anyway, not too long ago (about a month or so) another video of a rapper being a bitch surfaced.  Oh you never saw it? Let me attempt to throw it up…..

First of all, you never see said rapper in this video, so some may question the authenticity of the clip. I believe it. Why?

1. The rappers who are shooting the video can’t afford to rent all those SUVs. We all know (or at least we should) the only reason 50 Cent signed Spider Loc and 40 Glocc is so that when he comes out west, he won’t get robbed. (He should have signed some rappers out in Africa)

2.  That bodyguard looks familiar…I think I seen him before in a low budget video for a song with an annoying ass beat…

3. This video has not been denied at all. Instead, the smart thing was done, said rapper has never mentioned this situation

So anyways, the hip hop media (who I love oh so dearly) has downplayed this whole situation. Most sites haven’t mentioned it at all. What pisses me off even more than the fact they all loved to report on the situation with Officer Ross yet ignore this, is the sites who HAVE mentioned it and their reaction.  THEY HAVE THE NERVE TO TALK SHIT ABOUT THESE DUDES FOR HARASSING “LOLLIPOP”! Let me get this straight…. this cat portrays/advertises gang banging. It’s totally fine that he basically markets gang banging to little kids. He disses gangs who aren’t bloods, yet it’s wrong for Crips to approach him about it? It’s totally OK for him to play the role, and advertise ignorance, yet when some REAL ignorant NIGGAS approach him about some shit he said, their wrong? If that isn’t some STANley Cup Fan boy shit, I don’t know what is. I honestly feel the site I’m talking about is SOHH fucking retarded and deserved that hacking they got.

Don’t I have something better to talk about on 9/11? Yea, but I don’t feel like writing a whole blog about my HTC diamond.

...And for the record...that video was edited. I'd imagine to remove the word "slob" which I'm sure was said a milli times.

Splat! Right into the proverbial wall

You can only say rappers suck for so long before it gets boring. I guess I gotta give Charlamagne (or however the fuck you spell that) props…cuz I don’t know how he continuously goes at Chingy. That takes dedication. That takes focus. That takes….the lack of anything else to think about. I my friends (and haters) can’t do that. I went to Rock the Bells solo this year. I’ve never gone to a concert alone before. It was odd…yet sort of cool. I met all sorts of dope people and sat and took in all the music. The first piece of music I ever purchased was A Tribe Called Quest’s “Midnight Maruaders” cassette. I normally try to play it cool, clap occasionally, shit like that, but when Phife came out on stage I was jumping like I was 6 or 7 again and that Kriss Kross tape my mom bought me was playing. In my short (yet nowhere near finished) 25 years seeing Tribe was one of my favorite experiences of all time.  I left Rock the Bells with 4 things on my mind.

1. I really hope I don’t fall to sleep on the road on this 1hr drive home

2. When I get home I’m gonna….(I’ll leave that out)

3. I love hip hop.

4. I hate the media.

I got my Agent 47 on and snuck my way back to the “Media VIP” section of Rock the Bells when I was there. (with the help of Meka) I really should have taken a picture of the muthafucka’s working with the “media”.  Ninety-nine percent of them either:

A.      Couldn’t possibly relate to the acts on stage

B.      Couldn’t possibly give a shit about the acts on stage

These are the people who cover our music. Then they had the nerve to look at me funny like I wasn’t supposed to be at Rock the Bells. Brillyance from 9 years ago probably would have punched one of those cats in the face….or at least scare the shit out of them. Brillyance of about a month ago is wiser, and knew he’d probably never have a change to see Tribe perform live. I bit my tongue and walked off.

After attending Rock the Bells like everyone else. (Not attempting to cover it, just enjoying it..although I do probably have more videos of it than anybody else) I didn’t really care too much to blog. I mean, why? I could just continue to pirate/buy my shit, work, blow green (in more ways than one), play video games, smash pumpkins and get my dishes washed. Go back to school, and keep it pushing.

BUT FUCK THAT

Why sit around and let those lame ass muthafuckas be the only ones to speak on MY culture. Besides, I created the term “Stephen Garbonovich” , I can think of several ways to call Maino trash.

By the way…Me, Meka and some of my peoples did a Podcast. I didn’t through it online because we went over our “allotted time”. I’m gonna through part of that online by the end of the month, and we’ll start doing it again early next month.
