Wal-Mart "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly"

While I could easily throw a blog away burning commenters who attack me with studies done in England over 5 years ago as opposed to those done at USC a couple years ago, I chose to go with something else. The other day, while waiting in line forever at the Wal-Mart of downtown Long Beach for some old lady with horribly done make-up to get to my stuff, I remembered the words of my sister's ex-boyfriend years ago....

"You better get down to Wal-mart, they're even hiring niggas with records,"

Those were the wise words he left with me. At the time, I was unemployed, and working hard (or maybe it was hardly working?) at chasing my dreams of becoming Nino Brown of the LBC. Fuck a Wal-Mart, what the hell I look like working for them? I'll never be on no shit like that! Years since then, I have to admit, my stance has partially changed.

While I originally stated I'd never work for them, after over a month or so post unemployment check unemployment still without a job, I found myself applying to work there. While originally in my youth and naiveness, stated I wouldn't work for the Don of all retail spots, after becoming older, wiser and possessing empty pockets, I applied there and damn near everywhere else. While Wal-mart does treat their employees like shit, for some people, it's still an opportunity none the less. We'd all love to be lawyers and drive sports cars, but we all don't have that life. Some of us have to support ourselves as we struggle our way through college. In high population areas, you may find yourself competing with college graduates for basic data entry positions. (since they can't get better jobs WITH a degree) Others, who may have fallen off track prior to high school graduation, have it even harder. Who else is gonna hire these people as they attempt to find their way back to being (almost) equal citizens? Not to say that Calvin should do the chicken noodle soup because Wal-Mart hired his fresh out of jail ass, but Wal-mart isn't the only employer in the world. As bad as Wal-Mart's treatment of it's workers is, it's just as bad that a lot of them probably wouldn't have been hired too many other places. Although Wal-Mart doesn't pay enough for you buy a new house, it does pay more than welfare would, and gives it's employers work experience for their next application that unemployment wouldn't.

Sometimes I can't afford to spend the overpriced cost for something I (don't) need. (Other times I just don't want to). Wal-mart often provides you with the alternative. Often exchanging quality for price, Wal-mart gives you the opportunity to buy some shit you sometimes can't afford.  Other times, Wal-mart gives you lower prices on the same thing you'd buy somewhere else, just based of the price they get for buying in extreme bulk. The problem with this is that it makes it hard for other places (especially mom and pops shops) to compete. Are we forgetting something....they get those extremely low prices! That's a huge help to me and you, the consumer. I'd rather give less money to some huge company that was probably founded off slave money, then more money to some random ass old person who probably founded their hole in the wall ass store of slave money past down any day. Wal-mart can't completely kill competition and then raise prices, because that'd open the door for competition. So in reality they just torture competition, and keep supplying those that can't hook up with me for a cheaper Sony LCD, with those cheap ass Vizios. People could complain that this makes it harder for new people to get into retail....well then, muthafucka innovate. Come with something new, go do something different! You can't expect to do the same shit muthafuckas did 75 years ago! 45 years ago, I could have worked in some factory and made enough money for me, my wife, and two and half kids to live straight out of high school. Now, my black ass HAS to finish college. Get Diploma or Die Trying. Things change, you can no longer just open some small retail spot and prosper. The rising cost in living requires that someone be able to provide us the shit we do and don't need, at a price a lot cheaper. Don't get mad, I heard Mickey D's is now hiring!

Don't get shit twisted and thing I'm pimping out Wal-Mart as the best place of employment. It's got it's issues. What I am saying, is that while towns like Inglewood voted against the company moving into its city for some good reasons and some bullshit, there are SOME positives to this spot, and some people would be a lot worse off without it.
