The Reality From out West

For the Gods and Gangsters

While the TIs and YT may run this rap shit (word to Meka) financially, skill wise, the game belongs to the gods. Some of the dopest emcees in the game are 5 percenters. I spoke on this on my first blog ever, and nobody could really argue it….that’s because it’s true. Since the rap game has gotten quite boring as of late, I decided to go back and build upon a thought I already expressed.

“…It ain’t cool to represent  knowledge of self no more/ you can’t talk about the Father or Wallace Deen Muhammad/but talk about crack and muthafuckas is on it/The most innocent people get caught in the middle between real and what’s deemed/entertainment for people/ it’s not, that I’m opposed to how you get that cheddar/ but we know that we gods, so niggas should know better”
Chace Infinite “Seven”

At one point in time, the 5 percenters ruled the streets of New York. No, really, they did. While other cities were burning down due to racial tensions, Clarence 13X (referred to as Allah, or the Father), the founder of the 5 percenters, worked directly with the Mayor of NYC to keep the streets calm. That’s the kind of power the 5 percenters held in the hoods of NY. While riots were popping off in other major metropolises, New York stayed relatively calm. While some would like to focus on stereotypes and extremists from the 5 percenters, they had a much larger positive influence then they did negative. It’s no wonder that a movement as strong as this would influence our culture, which was born in the same area.

First and foremost New York hip hop slang is 5 percenter shit. Kicking knowledge, building, word is bond, and people referring to someone else as “G” (which originally was used to represent ”God”, even though people got shit fucked up and use G to represent gangster now) all originates from 5 percenters. It’s said that even the B Boy stance comes from 5 percenters. It’s how they stood at parties. The 5 percenters originated in the mid 60’s, hip hop was born around the late 60’s early 70’s.When hip hop started popping up at the parties, the 5 percenters were there and left their influence on the culture.

So why are some of the dopest emcees in the game 5 percenters? The five percenters influence on the black youth of NY who were apart of the hip hop culture helped spread their movement across the country. Earlier adopters in the hip hop culture like Rakim and Big Daddy Kane, would not only influence other New Yorkers like Nas and Busta Rhymes, but also people from other areas like Common (while I’m not fully sure Common is a 5 percenter, his heavy 5 percent references, and his performance at a “Show and Prove” pretty much tells me he is) in Chicago and Planet Asia out here in Cali. The 5 percenters heavy belief in the pursuit of knowledge (especially of self) is part of the main reason 5 percent emcees are some of the dopest. While they may occasionally stray, their duty to teach the 85% keeps them spitting bars about shit that matters.

Really, look at who are the emcees who are a part of the nation of gods and earths; Nas, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Planet Asia, Common, AZ, Busta Rhymes, Chace Infinite of Self Sceintific, RZA, Ghostface, GZA…basically the whole Wu Tang Clan. I could go on for days. Add in other emcees who aren’t 5 percenters, but are a part of the NOI, (Brother Ali, Lupe Fiasco, Black Thought, Mos Def, Freeway, Styles P) and you could basically say that most of the dopest emcees of all time come from some form of Muslim background. Basically, people with Islamic backgrounds in general run this rap shit talent wise, but the 5 percenters specifically have a huge influence on the hip hop culture.

For the record, I’m not a 5 percenter, I’m not Islamic, I’m actually agnostic (meaning I believe in god, yet I follow no religion) While I do believe in a lot of the 5 percent teachings, I don’t believe them all, and I just don’t see myself following a religion period. Also, before someone attempts to come in here and say the 5 percenters are racists, and that they believe the black man is god, and the white man is the devil, check yourself. Why they do believe the black man is god, they also believe the black man can be the devil (he can be a part of the 10 percent, the rich, slave makers of the 85%) While they do believe that the white man isn’t god, (due to the fact they believe the black man is the original man, which means that the white man couldn’t have made the black man) they do believe that the white man can be righteous. These are a part of their beliefs, but not all. Don’t come at me with the racists bullshit you learned from propaganda given to you by the bullshit media. If you have a problem with their beliefs, go to NY, they’ll pretty easy to find out there and in Chicago. Speak to them about that. Like I said, I’m not a part of their movement, however, I would put my weak ass flash light cop pay check up on Chace Infinite in a battle with any emcee in the game.

For some real west coast hip hop, go find the “Gods and Gangsters” mixtape from Self Scientific. It’s a compilation of songs done mainly by 5 percenter emcees. Also check “Change” or “The Self Science” by Self Scientific. For more info on the 5 percenters in general, check book entitled "The Five Percenters" written by a man named Micheael Muhammad Knight.
