The Undisputed Truth

The Hype Market Has Been Oversaturated

We all know the names. Jigga, Nas, Kanye…but I’m beginning to wish I didn’t. Honestly, how much can the world talk about these people without getting tired of them? I feel like for the past two or three months that’s all I’ve been hearing about. Everyday something new with them. Jay sold out the tour in a minute. Nas is naming his album something “controversial”. Now he’s not naming his album something “controversial”…Oh, wait! Nevermind. He’s naming it something “controversial” again and now he even added an extra letter for good measure. And don’t forget about Mr. West. Shit, I even saw him on TMZ the other day. Now you know you’ve hyped yourself up too much when you find yourself on a show that prides itself on showcasing celebs who don’t do a damn thing worth reading about (read: celebutantes).

The fact of the matter is that anything is good in moderation. But there comes a point when you hear about these people so much that you just don’t want to hear about them anymore. I’m at that point. At least give me one day without hearing these people’s names. Shit, I can’t even come on DX and read a piece that wasn’t about any of the hype-whores without seeing their name somewhere in the comments most of the time.

And let’s not forget the most agitating aspect of all of this hype. You sit around waiting and anticipating the album drop or the movie release or what the fuck ever, and then finally it drops (or leaks, whatever). Then what happens when you listen to or watch the shit? It doesn’t live up to the hype that it got. Yeah, I saw everybody getting all pee-their-pants-happy over the Kanye West vs. 50 Cent album release, and then guess what? Neither album was as good as it was suspected to be. Yeah, yeah, argue with me. Tell me Graduation was a classic. Whatever. It was a classic average album. Sure, it beats the hell out of, say, Hurricane Chris’ album. But it was no Illmatic*.

If you’re going to hype yourself up like that, dammit, live up to the hype. Because if you don’t? I’m just going to get sick of you. And when I get sick of you? You don’t get my money for albums, shows, etc. That’s when you’ve reached the point where you put out too much hype – when people no longer care about it. It’s a fine line that separates the “too much” from the “not enough”. Tiptoe carefully, rappers.

*Yes, I see the irony in using a current hypeslut's album to knock another hypeslut's hustle. But dammit, Illmatic was that album, and it deserves that kind of shine. And Nas should use it as an example of the quality of music that his fans expect from him. Please, Nasir, no more Nastradamus.
