As Kanye keeps dropping records from 808's and Heartbreak which I'm trying to avoid listening to so that something is a surprise when I listen to the album what's struck me is that he's created two sides for this album...either you love it or you hate it. This is interesting to me because Kanye, who was everyones favorite backpack rapper, hasn't really been in that position before with any of his albums or music, maybe for his clothes and style of dress but aside from that. The switch over to singing and autotune has been embraced by some but the die hard hip hop fans havent been so quickly to move at all.
It made me think 'Do hip hop fans want change? Do they want their favorite artist to reinvent themselves?' The answer I came up with is HELL NO and if theres any change fans want it to be more like an upgrade as opposed to a complete makeover.
Take everybody's favorite (if not he should be), Andre 3000 for example. When he first started wearing crazy shit like lamb skin pants, shoulder pads, furs and wigs people thought he was crazy as hell wished he'd just wear regular clothes and then later on when they heard Hey Ya and that he would be mostly singing on The Love Below album, the hip hop heads were disappointed. As we know after everyone heard it, they loved it but initially the idea of him changing up completely from what fans had gotten accustomed to left people uneasy.
Think about how many times we've judged an artist latest album by how much it wasn't like the last? How many times have we stopped following a group because they lost one member or gained another? How many times have we complained because a rapper doesnt have production from the producer we prefer them to work with regardless of how good they may work together in their daily life? People scream to the top of their lungs that Primo should be on every Jay and Nas project everytime they drop something even though it never seems to change anything. Even now would I prefer Wayne when he was rapping instead of singing or that other stuff he does now? Or Game over Dre production? Old classic Tribe? Pete Rock and CL again? Common and Ye or No ID (sorry the Pharrell joints aint doing it for me)? Of course
Point blank, I think Hip Hop fans like change in steps as does most people. No one likes to wake up to see that the room they've slept in/are comfortable in has been rearranged to where we can still recognize it but aren't quite sure where we fit in it. At the same time we have to allow artists to do what they feel and not box them cause if we didnt we still be rapping like the sugar hill gang. Do I wish Jay still rapped like he did on Reasonable Doubt or Blueprint? Of course. Do I wish Nas could put out an album as complete as Illmatic? No question but with them making different type of projects it only makes me appreciate those same albums I fell in love with even more.
All in all, let the artist do them. Win or lose. And artist don't leave your fans out in the cold either, they got you here in the first place.
New music coming soon
