Nas to me has always been one of them people where its either you like him or you dont and he could give a fuck less either way. He's always had his own style and as I'm listening to 'Hero' for like the 12th time in a row its amazing to hear him continually grow in positive way. So many artist of his caliber get to that level of their career and stop trying to make anything progressive. They'll make albums that may pacify the average listener or just put stuff out to stay relevent. But Nas is one of the only artist who still have enough heart to push the envelope and raise the bar while commenting on subjects other emcee's are scared to touch. Thats what i respect the most. Thats what an emcee has always been in my opinion.
Honestly when I look back who else (aside from maybe 2pac) who would make records like 'Gave You Power', 'Black Girl Lost', 'One Love' and 'Rewind'. Nas is one of the few who try new shit as far as concepts and creativity, who else could spit on a track in the voice of a detective or a women and pull it off without being considered a complete clown? No one.
No lie, I was wondering where he was going when he originally titled it Nigger mainly because I seen an interview where they asked him about if Hip Hop was still dead and he responded saying something along the lines that the whole hip hop is dead thing was last year and he's on something new now. At first I thought, is this just a ploy just to get more media attention through controversy? But as the more songs get revealed and the more posters are released I'm seeing exactly where he's going. Hopefully the album will be like a mirror to not only hip hop/black culture but to American society. Racial tension aint left nowhere as much as some would like to act like it doesnt exist and America is perfect. When I heard the 3rd verse in Hero made me wish they didnt change the name of the album but it helps us see how they'll try to censor your creativity.
Whether you think he's a liar living through other peoples lives or if you are one of those who believe he is the greatest to touch the mic you gotta be able to respect an emcee who takes as many risks as he does. It would be so much easier for an artist to play it safe in times where sales arent what they were but the fact that he makes whatever type of music he wants without allowing himself to become concerned with if his album goes platinum or not is rare to see.
So even though I'll buy C3 to see what Wayne does, the real album i'm waiting on is Nigger (dont matter what they change it to)
