Reflections of Race and Rape: The Duke Aftermath

It’s been a hell of a got damn week for news. Between Don Imus (I can’t believe they canned him, it’s a new day), Anna Nicole (thank God it’s over) and Rosie (maybe I need to stop watching Fox News) it’s time to issue a media chin check to all the spin doctors trying to compare the Imus issue to the Duke rape case.

Before I continue, let me just say….”NOBODY LIKES IT WHEN IT’S GOT DAMN THEM!”

I couldn’t help but chuckle as I watched the players read their statements, proclaiming their innocence in the matter. If we were to close our eyes or turn them away from the TV screen, you’d swear it was a poor Black defendant talking about the ills of the criminal justice system, the overzealous prosecutor looking for a high profile conviction and the cops who obviously did a very shitty job of investigating the case.

For the record, the players’ guilt or innocence is not a concern of mine at this point. I only write to highlight the bullshit that poor people (and poor people of color specifically) go through and have gone through for DECADES.

Finally, somebody gets it. The Duke boys, faced with looking at life through cell bars have a new appreciation for freedom, the wrongly accused, and the money that kept their asses out of the pen.

"Many people across this country, across this state would not have the opportunity that we did, and this could simply have been brushed underneath the rug just as another case and some innocent person would end up in jail for their entire life," David Evans said. "It's just not right."

You got damn right, it’s not right.

One can only hope that these three young men, and other melanin deficient folks in power and across the country remember this the next time a darker hued man or woman is up on charges.
