Talking about working with her on music, he said: “I remember sitting with North in Italy and playing her ‘Back to Me,’ and asking her, ‘What do you think about this line in the middle of the song?’ And I was like, ‘Do you think I should change this?’ And she’s like, ‘You know, it’s a good song.’ Sometimes I feel like my mom speaks through her.”

Continuing the spiritual theme of his comments, West added: “She’s like, ‘It’s a good song. This is just a banger. Like you gotta say what you feel.’ A lot of times when you go into the whole Jesus, devout… level religious, you have thoughts in your mind and that you hiding them from yourself.”

Donda West passed away of cardiopulmonary failure in November 2007, following a a lengthy liposuction, tummy-tuck and breast reduction.

Dr. West had gained increased exposure through her son’s rise to stardom. Earlier this year she published Raising Kanye, a memoir on her relationship with her son in his childhood. The book was published in May 2007 by Simon & Shuster. The campaign led to appearances on Oprah and The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

In a 2015 interview with Inside Edition, Dr. Jan Addams, the plastic surgeon who operated on Dr. West prior to her death read a letter he wrote at the time of her death after speaking with people who were with her.

“Her caregivers gave her, whoa, 20 Vicodin tabs in less than 20 hours,” he says, reading the letter.

Adams says that she died from cardiopulmonary failure and the amount of medication contributed to her choking on her own vomit, not from complications of the surgery, which consisted of a tummy tuck, breast reduction and liposuction.

Adams has said that people have scapegoated him for her death.

The family chose not to follow Adams’ advice that West recover in a medical facility and instead left her in the care of Kanye’s cousin, Stephan Scoggins, who is a registered nurse. Adams says that Scoggins was irresponsible in his care of West.

West also discussed his religious conflict, explaining that he feels as if God and Jesus have not always been there for him.

“I have my issues with Jesus. There’s a lot of stuff I went through, that I prayed, and I ain’t see Jesus show up … I had to put my experience in this world, my experience with my children, my experience with other people, my experience with my account, my experience with my brand, and my experience with the level of music that I was dealing with in my own hands.”

He added: “A lot of times I feel like in our society, in America, people, Christians, we depend on Jesus so much that we won’t put in the work ourselves. The main thing I don’t rock with is like, ‘I’m gonna pray for you.’ It’s just like, you can actually physically do something yourself, too, more than just praying.”

North also appears to be inspired by her father after she announced her debut album at one of her father and Ty Dolla $ign’s listening events to promote their collaborative project Vultures 2.
